I love words – I love words that create images of power and beauty, hot and spicy words that linger on the tongue and in the mind, colourful and rich. Words can sweep across the page or blow gently like a refreshing breeze. Or they can thunder and storm into the head, pounding on the thoughts and metaphorically grabbing you by your collar to shake your heart with terrible force. But they can be tender and gentle too, conveying great love and caressing the heart with simple feeling and heartfelt longing.
Words are indeed powerful – they have recorded the rise and fall of great civilisations, they can reach into the heart and made us weep. Sometimes we forget the power of words, how they can be manipulated and used to deceive and hide behind. When used thoughtlessly or cruelly they can cut as deeply as any blade, wound as effectively as any weapon. They can lie and trick as cleverly as any con artist, they can distort the truth with ease.
Words can make war, but they can also make peace. When inspired by love or a longing for compassion and justice, they can reach into the very depth of our being and inspire mankind to reach out and become better than we have been. Though I have heard Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream’ speech many times, the power of it never fails to reach into my very core. Words can reveal truth.
Words can fight, but they can fly too. They can take us to worlds we have never heard of, to lands we have yet to discover and through this wild and alien universe in the blink of an eye. They can take us back into the mists of time so that we can catch a glimpse of the people and the lives that have gone before us. Through words we too can walk for a while with men and women who have carved out the history that runs through us like the blood in our veins, and share their tragedies and triumphs.
And yet none of these words, however beautiful they might be, can compare to the single and most wondrous word of them all:
*“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.”
And so my fingers hover over the keyboard as I ponder where to start. What words shall I write? What is it I want to say?
*John 1:1-2 NIV
