Easy to solve, I thought. We’ll just phone the College, tell them of the dilemma and enroll him the next semester with their promised scholarship.
“Oh, we’re so sorry,” the administrative assistant related to me, “that scholarship was only good if your son joined us at the beginning of his freshman semester.”
Stunned, I hung up the phone and moaned, “Oh, no…we’re too late. We’ve really blown it. He’s lost the scholarship.”
Over the next week I phoned the College a second time asking if there was any way the scholarship could be reinstated. “No, this is our policy,” they explained. It was a closed case.
I began to pray, “God, there must be a way.” Almost immediately my mind heard the words, “With man it’s impossible, but with God all things are possible.” The words startled me because they were so opposite of what the College was saying. Lord, how can this be? The College has said it’s impossible. But the words were repeated again… “With God all things are possible. Faith began to rise up in my heart. Somehow God was going to give Mike a fresh start.
As we talked with the College a third time, they reiterated again that Mike could come to school there but that there would be no financial help. Their policy was that if you don’t start as a freshman, you lose the entire four years of scholarship money. That would be a $24,000 loss. You can't come in as a transfer student and receive the scholarship.
With this word, I began to earnestly seek God. The exhortation that all things were possible with God grew in my heart and soon I felt that this school was where God wanted Mike to be and that God, in His supernatural power, would somehow make it happen. The firm “no” from the college had become a small obstacle in my mind compared to the firmer “yes” I was hearing from God.
We decided to try once more. This time we traveled to the College to talk with Admissions in person. As we sat in the waiting room, Mike was called in by himself for a conference. After fifteen minutes, the Assistant left but asked Bill and I to come in with Mike. Downcast, Mike related the same doleful news we had heard on the phone. The admissions counselor had confirmed the worst. The rule stood. The situation looked hopeless. But God………. “Mike, I don’t understand it but somehow all things are possible with God.”
The next 15 minutes went by slowly but soon the assistant returned to the room with a broad smile on her face. “I’ve talked with the Vice President of Admissions,” she related, “and we’ve found a way for you to receive the scholarship.” He soon followed into the room and explained that there was one way Mike could receive the scholarship and the school still maintain the integrity of their standing rules. That would be if Mike would drop out of Junior college and not finish his semester there. Then he could come to the College the next semester as a first semester freshman. They would reinstate his application and he would receive the full scholarship that had previously been awarded to him. Not only that but because of his extended high school Spanish, they felt he could begin with Spanish 4. If he could maintain a “B” in that class, they would “give” him 12 credit hours for Spanish 1, 2, and 3 without charge. Basically, a free semester with no study. Mike went on to do just that and graduated in 3 ½ years. Our God is an awesome God, truly a God of the impossible, a God of fresh starts.
