.Cover your head and pretend you are still asleep when your husband asks you if his pink tie goes with his red shirt. Throw in a snore for good measure.
.Ignore the wad of clothing that was left on the floor the night before because the hamper was too far away and you were too tired. Think positive. Focus instead on that pile of clean clothes from yesterday that is still sitting on your dresser awaiting your touch. Half your job is already done.
.Eat your daughter’s cereal. It contains way more sugar than yours and will instantly start your blood pumping.
.Wake your teenager only after you have made sure there is enough hot water for her twenty minute shower and that you have not eaten the last bagel with your breakfast. If you mistakenly used all the cream cheese in your casserole the night before, bury the container at the bottom of the garbage can. It will hopefully delay the inevitable.
.Hide in your room immediately after tapping on her door.
.Pull on your loosest sweatpants and a college sweatshirt so that you will not only feel thinner but younger too. Don’t stare at your hair in the mirror too long. Reach for a hair tie instead.
.Set the timer so that you can shower two hours later when the water is hot again.
.Remove the daily newspaper from under your husband’s sticky cereal bowl and skip the obituaries. Your name isn’t there yet. Start with Dear Abby. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that other people have more issues than your family. What a lift when you discover that who takes out the garbage ranks low and probably will never make the paper.
.Tell your teen you love her as she collects up her backpack, CD’s, all your good pens and the loose change your husband emptied from his pockets the night before. (Don’t worry; there are always the couch cushions). Asking for a kiss might be pushing it. Tell her you will pray for her. She really does hear you and appreciates it.
.When your home is finally quiet and you’re convinced the next half hour is really yours, curl up in your favorite chair and reach for your bible. Pray for your husband in his stop sign shirt and for your teen with her self induced hearing loss. They count on it. It’s your guarantee that at least part of your day and theirs will get off to a better start.
