“John, will you please help me. I just can’t find it and I know it would be a tremendous help to get through these terrible times of war. We have been suffering so much these past few years.”
“Mary, I just don’t understand why you are making such an important situation over one missing book. How in the world could it help us cope any better? It is just a book. Did you say your grandparents used to read it to you when you were a little girl?”
“Yes John, it was my mom’s mother. She was such a wonderful person, always loving, kind, caring so much for family. She said if we would just read the book and insist that our family all read it life would be better.”
Mary had been searching for a very long time. She recalled as a child how she always felt safe and happy when Grandma would sit down with her and read the pages of the book. She was so young at the time that she couldn’t remember the name of the book now, but, she was sure Mama had put it in a very safe place way back in the beginning.
When grandma was dying she told Mama to hid it really good and only take it out to read to the family when she felt it was safe to do so. It hadn’t been that safe in many years and was still not allowed here in this country .
Now that Mary and John had two children of their own, Mary felt she must find the book and pass the wonderful words on to their children. She also felt it was important to share it with John as he had never seen the book and must know the importance of the stories within.
John finally realized how important the book was to Mary so he joined in the search. He climbed the stairs, that hadn’t been used in a very long time, up to the attic. He was amazed at all the junk that was stored there. He thought very seriously, “Now if I was an old woman, hiding a family treasure, where among all these items would I feel it was safe.”
He stood, deep in thought, at the top of the stairs. As he glanced around the room he saw what appeared to be a baby cradle, behind an old beat-up dresser.
He walked over, reached down in amazement, thinking of all the babies who must have nestled in that mattress. Then as he ran his hand along the top of the mattress he felt something hard inside the cover. How strange he thought, why would there be a hard spot here. He quickly pulled the seam apart, which was quite easy considering the age of the fabric, and there lay an old, darkened by age book. On the front were the words, Holy Bible.
As he began to open the book and read, he heard footsteps on the stairs, but he was so enthralled with the words he was reading, “In the beginning..
Mary stood, staring at the book in Johns hands, and reached out, quietly encircling him with her arms. Tears slowly appearing on her cheeks. At last, she would be able to share God’s words with her family.
