I sometimes find it entertaining to sit quietly in a waiting room and see if anyone looks up from their magazine or electronic device long enough to make eye contact. If they do, it never ceases to amaze me what some people use as conversation starters in those first few awkward moments. Ten to one it’s the weather. Next in line might be a news or sports headliner followed by the latest Hollywood buzz. I rarely find a conversation that focuses on my favorite subject which is by far the unsurpassable love of God.
In today’s world people are so busy texting and fiddling with electronic devices that it is almost impossible to get a face to face conversation started. Most people have forgotten how much it means to have someone look directly into their eyes, right down to the depth of their heart.
If Jesus had fulfilled His ministry in this crazy electronic age we live in, I think He would have the same one on one approach as He did back then. It takes an effort to pay attention to those around us. Deliberately looking into someone’s face can be risky. You might be rudely told to mind your own business or you might be humbly asked if you can spare some change.
The next time two or more people are gathered near you for any reason, I encourage you to take this challenge. Stop texting. Put away your phone. Tune in. Listen to the voices of those around you; but most of all pay attention to the one who is in you. Remember that the Lord truly is in your midst. And that He is listening to what we all have to say. He knows the point of our conversations and all those words in between that have no point at all.
Oh how I love to be with someone whose delight is in the Lord. It is hard to turn a deaf ear to a passionate testimony. I also love the song by the group Hillsong called, “The Days of Elijah”, where the chorus says over and over, “there’s no God like Jehovah”.
The next time you are out and about I challenge you to put away your phone. Find someone to talk to and then brag a little on the Lord. Lift Him up every chance you get. Tell someone that above all else; above the ever changing weather, above the adrenaline rush of the super bowl, above the latest political debates, amidst life’s greatest triumphs, or deepest despair, “There’s no God like Jehovah”.
I challenge you to find a way to warm someone’s heart today with the most satisfying topic of all, salvation’s story and heaven’s glory. Don’t waste a single breath on idle conversation. Don’t use precious time on meaningless twittering and texting. Say a few words in person that will linger in the thoughts of those around you long after you have come and gone. Above all, may those who come face to face with you, feel as if they have been face to face with Him.
Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation
aright will I shew the salvation of God. Psalm 50:23 KJV
