As he walked his eyes took in the great variety of nature. He especially enjoyed watching the birds flit from tree to tree in their seemingly endless search for food. His mind immediately recalled Jesus' words about how the heavenly father provides food for each one of them. Like many of Jesus' lessons, that one about not worrying was one that many people failed to put into practice. Somewhere along the way being busy every moment of every day became the norm and there was no looking back.
Eventually Matthew's feet grew tired and a bench beckoned with the promise of rest. He sat down with a contented sigh and happily watched the ducks swim about, occasionally fly up in the air, and then land with grace and continue to move easily around the lake. He was so engrossed in watching the remarkable ballet that he hadn't noticed a woman sit down next to him.
"Retirement is wonderful, isn't it?" She said.
The words startled Matthew out of his reverie. He turned his head to look at the woman who was dressed in a jogging outfit that was a bright shade of yellow. She held a large bag of seeds which she had propped up on her lap and out of which she tossed some of the seeds on the ground for the birds to eat. Once she began she quickly had a large flock of admirers who watched her with increasing intensity.
"I imagine so," Matthew replied absent-mindedly.
The woman stopped throwing the seeds, turned toward Matthew and said, "You aren't retired?"
"I am not."
"Then what brings you out today?"
"I'm taking my Sabbath."
"You're what?"
"I'm taking a day of rest."
"Oh."
"Do you ever rest?"
"I'm retired. I rest all the time."
Matthew chuckled as he held out his hand. "You can call me Willie."
The woman smiled, took the hand, and said, "I'm Rebecca."
Matthew withdrew his hand and said, "I actually don't believe in retirement."
"You don't. You believe in working all of your life?"
"I do."
"How?"
"Not working every day."
"I don't think I understand."
"Most people don't."
Matthew stood to his feet, began to walk off but stopped and turned back toward Rebecca. He looked at her for a moment as she fed more birds.
"It is nice what you are doing for those birds, Rebecca. I'm sure they appreciate it."
"It feels good to do something worthwhile."
"I'm sure it does. Good-bye, Rebecca."
"Bye," Rebecca waved as she continued spreading seeds.
Matthew turned and continued on his way. He looked up at the beautiful, blue sky. He looked about at the wonders of nature. He sighed contentedly. He knew he had much work to be done, but not today. Today was rest and he felt it working its wonders all the way to his bones.
