Moses and Elijah were talking to a radiant Jesus and their focus was on a future momentous event: “His departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.” Luke 9:31.
Both men were major Old Testament figures. Moses was the supreme representative of the law and Elijah likewise of the prophets. Their ministries had been part of God’s preparation for the gospel, and now they talked with their expected Messiah himself.
Why should the going away of Jesus be the focus of their conversation? No way had those three disciples on the mountain understood Jesus when he had told them, “I am going to the Father.” John 14:28.
However, Moses and Elijah knew. They understood precisely why Jesus had come into the world and with equal certainty, they knew why and how he would depart; he was returning to the Father, and his route would be through death.
The text tells us another incredible fact. His departure was something “He was about to accomplish”.
No doubt, the Father sent Moses and Elijah to encourage our blessed Saviour to complete his unblemished work to save sinners. He was, after all, fully human, and he knew what trials and temptations were. Moreover, his enemy whom he had subdued in the wilderness having never been far away was soon to enter Judas, his betrayer.
Jesus’s earthly life had never been easy; he needed encouragement more than ever.
However, this word “accomplish” tells us something vital about our Saviour. Contrary to some ideas that abound in the church today, Jesus was not a weak, helpless, vulnerable man. He was not at the mercy of men. He ‘humbled himself’, yes, but even so, he was in charge from beginning to end; his humility was not a sign of weakness.
Facing the powerful Jewish leadership, he called them hypocrites and fools. He showed no fear when a mob came to arrest him. He even contradicted the boasting of Pilate about his having power to crucify him. No, our Lord Jesus was anything but weak.
He refers to his power when he tells his disciples, “I lay down my life that I may take it again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.” John 10:17. 18. (NKJV)
He was in absolute control of his destiny. At the appointed day, the hour, and the minute, he succeeded. Nothing could stop him. “When the time was come that he should be received up, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.” Luke 9:31. (NKJV)
When he had suffered in our place on the Cross, he could triumphantly say, “It is finished!”
Jesus had accomplished his departure!
He made no New Year resolutions.
He didn’t need to.
His resolution was Eternal, and he kept that resolution perfectly.
Hallelujah!
