The furrows of the ploughed field lay dark, cold and wet in the first light of the December day. Stillness had replaced the rain and wind of the night.
As the pale sun climbed, it warmed the damp soil and vegetation, creating slow drifts of steam. The earth was breathing out its pleasure in activity. The warmth, moisture and light were factors that have always set in motion every form of life on earth. By mid-morning, the steam had dissipated, giving way to an upward drift of warm air. The scene was set for a miracle.
In the early afternoon, two walkers strolled along the lane. They stopped in amazement at the gate. Shimmering in the weak sunshine, a tapestry of gossamer adorned every furrow in the small field.
Unobserved by anyone, myriads of tiny spiders had been waiting in the hedges and banks. After the morning’s steamy introduction, the warmth had stimulated them for their unique migration. Clinging to their launch pads of vegetation, they had begun spinning threads of the finest silk to sway above them in the gentle convection currents. As soon as each spider’s thread became buoyant enough, it floated off into adventure.
Having missed that gentle exodus to the furrows, the walkers were delighted to see the silver glory the spiders had relocated.
Praise the Lord! He can transform our dark furrows with his own heavenly light and beauty.
