Alright, I know a bunch of you had no problem whatsoever in covering some of these challenge topics this quarter, but trees? Oh, please!
First, it was fruit. Now, some of you got right clever with this, but there was nothin' I could come up with! There were the usual "fruit of the Spirit" stories and the ones about Adam and Eve eatin' the fruit of that one tree they weren't supposed to eat off of. Oh, and I think there might've also been one or two about "forbidden fruit." Gee, I didn't see that one comin'. Should I pour a little more sarcasm on that or do you get it?
Anyways, I just had nothin'! One gal suggested I use fruit as a prop. For instance, a couple starts fightin' and before you know it, the girl picks up a couple apples and bananas from the fruit bowl on the table and throws 'em at the guy. Ok, I though. That's not bad, but I'm no good at writin' about arguments. I just don't got what it takes for that, I guess.
Sunday rolled around, and no story.
The next topic was fragrance. By this time, people are startin' to think about what the theme is for this quarter. I know what it is now, but back then, I had no clue. Kinda like I had no clue what to write for "fragrance," either. And it was supposed to be a "sweet smell," not something stinky like your fridge or your baby's diaper. I did get to read some of those fruity stories, and I felt like I was a bit stupid, 'cuz there were some really good ones! I'd read one and be like, "D'oh! I coulda written somethin' like that!" or "Now, why didn't I think of this?" Horrible. I just felt horrible!
For fragrance, obviously, the same thing happened. I couldn't believe it! Two weeks in a row, and I had nothin' for both weeks. That'd never happened before. It hurt my pride – not that there's anythin' wrong with that, right? So I went through another week of torture.
Fortunately, I got somethin' in for "rain," but it didn't start a lucky streak or nothin'. I missed the next one after that. It has been like that all quarter! Here I was, after having entered all ten weeks in the last quarter, and I'm forced to sit out for more than half of this quarter. But I'm determined. I will not end this quarter without writing somethin' on trees. If only I could just come up with an idea.
You know what floors me? It's the fact that every single one of you has some kind of spiritual lesson in your challenges. Some do it by writing devotionals and others choose to do somethin' a little more…subtle. Some keep it light and on or two of you go dark on us. Yeah, you know who you are. The point is, you do it so well and it looks so easy. I learn something every week from all of you and I appreciate it. I really do. God bless you for it.
I struggle with mine. I could probably do just as well without that spiritual aspect, but I don't want to. It's important to me that I put it in, 'cuz I never know who's gonna read it.
Trees. I still got nothin'. I mean, I could write about a forest or a single tree. I even tried to write a poem, but that's just not my thing. Maybe I can write about people comin' out west on the Oregon Trail and seein' the huge trees there. Or I could write about the tree that would eventually become the cross Christ died on. Nah…that'll probably be done, and done better than I could ever do.
So…trees. Nothin'. What about you? You got any ideas?
