The man slept heavily on the couch. He was exhausted from the extremes of summer heat. Church had been as humid as a sauna and his car was as suffocating as a hot desert wind. He gave up his weariness in the cool living room. His bible barely landed on the coffee table. Sweaty jeans, shirt, socks and shoes formed small islands on the wood floor. Sleep quickly captured the body and his spirit was free to roam again.
He was standing in a glorious floral garden facing a brick wall covered in blossoming vines. Within the wall was a wooden door. The scene reminded him of an illustration from a fairy tale book he had read as a child. Smiling to himself as his eyes took in the beauty of the flowers, someone knocked at the door. Somehow he knew it wasn’t Goldilocks on the other side. The man stared at the door but he didn’t move to open it. The knocking continued.
The man looked down. The stone path under his bare feet had become cool sand. He raised his eyes to see a blue-green ocean push waves closer and closer daring to wash over his feet. There was no one else on the beach but him and a man robed in white standing waist deep in the water looking straight at him. This was the person on the other side of the door yet no words ran through his mind to confirm this. He wanted to leave the beach but his feet were rooted in the sand. All he could do was face the one standing in the shifting ocean. Then the white robed man beckoned him to come into the water now up to his chest. There was no way to avoid the invitation. No door to hide behind this time. He had to make a choice – stay safe on solid ground or wade into the deep end with the man.
Slowly the man opened his eyes to rest on the afternoon shadows stretched across the living room floor. He stayed on the couch re-winding the dream in his mind. No interpreter needed. The message was so clear. He knew he was in a comfortable, protected place in his life but he had ignored the Holy Spirit’s gentle nudges to accept the mission silently living in his heart. He had refused to open the door, not to let Jesus in but to go with Him into the wilderness of the world to save lost souls. God was drawing him again. The man closed his eyes and surrendered. He was ready to walk into the deep.
