I put the kettle on, open the cookie packet and hunt for the nuts. The voice of ‘The Skinny Lady’ haunts me. “Little snacks, bigger slacks”, she’d say, while holding a kilo of pure fat in her hands. Ugh. That was a few years ago. She too was a fat person once, but unlike me, she stuck to her eating and exercise plan and eventually became a leader of a weight-loss support group. I attended for a while, but it was a waste of hard-earned money, since I hardly changed my behaviour. She once despairingly asked me, “Have you been counting your points?” (I was allowed 20 points a day.) “Oh yes”, I replied confidently. “I counted 47 on Sunday.” She missed the humour.
Standing at the cupboard door, remembering that block of fat, I decide to take a raincheck on the nuts. After all, I’m not craving them, probably because of the bag of chocolate-coated almonds I bought yesterday. I would have shared, but there were none left when I got home.
Back to the challenge article….. Where do I start? A grey fog is settling over my brain and my eyes are heavy. The pillow calls my name. I’ve been reading a really gripping story recently, which should have lasted me as bedtime reading for a few weeks, but I’m almost finished already. It could be why I’m tired. That kettle must be almost boiled now.
Perhaps I’ll have a break from FaithWriters this week. The hobby writing course I’m taking says, “Write a little every day”, but that’s rather unrealistic. As a good Christian, I have my daily quiet time (well … okay … too often I hit the snooze button until the last possible moment, but the intention is good), go to work, am out many evenings, and there simply isn’t time to write daily. FaithWriters provides some good disciplined regular writing opportunities, but missing one week won’t matter…. As I get up to leave the computer, though, inspiration hits me with a jolt.
I’m looking forward to God saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant”. Now, where does the Bible talk about that? Ah – there it is in the parable of the talents. The master entrusted his three servants with small things, and two made the most of what they’d been given but one didn’t. Of course, I’m like those two good servants, so our heavenly master will say to me when He returns, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share in your master’s happiness.” (Mt. 25:21,23 NIV).
Perhaps I’ll write up that story properly later, with a nice moral at the end about being obedient in the little things rather than focusing on the big things. First things first, though – caffeine. I ate those cookies already while waiting for the kettle to boil. Perhaps I’ll have some banana bread now with my coffee.
Stand up, wriggle, ouch … these trousers sure are snug around the hips and they’re shorter too. They must have shrunk in the wash … again.
