protected area, in its natural or semi-
natural state, or planted, and set
aside for human recreation and
enjoyment, or for the protection of
wild life or natural habitat. Usually,
it consists of rock, soil, water,
flora, fauna and grass areas. Many
parks are legally protected by law.
The first parks were deer parks,
land set aside for hunting by royalty
and the aristocracy in medieval
times. They had walls or thick hedges
around to keep game in and people out.
In the United States, parks range
from National, State, county and
city. They add pleasures such as
hiking, camping, walking, jogging,
canoeing, kayaking,skiing,photography,
bird watching or simply taking in a
view.
On June 30, 1864, the United
States developed the concept of
preserving landscapes for the pleasure
of people. It was signed by Abraham
Lincoln and known as the Yosemite
Grant. Ferdinand Vandiveer
Hayden led an expedition into
Yellowstone in 1871. Thomas Moran, a
photographer, joined him. Hayden
presented a 500 page report along with
Moran’s photographs to the Department
of Interior. A bill was presented and
passed by the Senate and Congress on
March 01, 1872. Yellowstone became the
first National Park.
Four decades later under
President Theodore Roosevelt,
Yosemite, became a national park.
John Muir was instrumental in
establishing Yosemite. He petitioned
the U.S. Congress for the Park bill
that was passed in 1890. In addition
to Yosemite, Sequoia National Park was
added. Because of Muir’s spiritual
and enthusiasm toward nature, he
inspired readers, including presidents
and congressmen to take action to help
preserve large nature areas. He is
known as the “Father of the National
Parks.” Biographer Donald Worster
stated Muir believed his mission was
saving the American soul from total
to materialism. It was his desire to
protect and preserve wild and natural
environment. It has been said Muir
revealed the mind of God in his
ability to enjoy, preserve and tell
others about his natural experiences.
Parks have the capacity to take
a person on a quiet and thoughtful
journey. In the park, one can
feel God’s presence. One can behold
the beauty of birds, animals, rocks,
grass, flowers, earth, land,wind,
water and sky. Muir said, “so
gloriously colored, and so luminous,
awakening and warming all the mighty
host to do gladly their shining day’s
work, to whose light everything seems
equally divine, opening a thousand
windows to show us God.” A walk in
the park will make one shout, “The
whole earth is full of thy glory.”
