Those first delicate buds of spring are a sight for sore eyes. After the long, dark, dreary winter, there is hope at last that the sun will again warm the earth. Spirits are revived, hope is restored. Yet the sad truth is that the winter will return. The reprieve is only temporary.
A first kiss on a moonlit night under the canopy of stars. Surely, this is the man God has prepared me for. He makes me feel special, he loves me, and together we’re going to have a wonderful life together. But things go wrong; dreams evaporate. That invigorating first kiss becomes just another distant memory.
This is their first child. Their lives will never again be the same. They absolutely adore their baby son. They will never repeat the mistakes their own parents made. This little man is going to be raised perfectly, and he will become handsome, intelligent, creative, sporty and a leader for the people. Disappointment is inevitable. After all, they are all human. God forbid, this child may yet even die before he reaches old age.
The first day of school is heart-wrenching for the mother … and hard for the child. But it is the beginning of a new phase. One day, this child will be a rocket scientist. Or perhaps he will find a cure for cancer. Indeed, he might even negotiate world peace. The child grows up to become an overweight sales clerk with a hefty credit card bill. Dreams dashed again.
Adam – the first man. God made him to be in relationship with himself. How the angels must have wondered and puzzled to see God make these creatures in His own image. But the evil one contaminated this amazing creation and what is stranger, God allowed that first couple to choose between the lie and the truth. We’ve been living a lie ever since.
This is my first competition entry with FaithWriters. In a year of two, surely I’ll publish my first book. But the end of the decade I’ll be a highly acclaimed author, won’t I? Disappointment is indeed inevitable.
Oh, the memory of my first love for Christ. Although only a child, anybody in my path was given the gospel. What happened? That vibrant unwavering flame flickered and eventually became a gentle glow. I fear being labelled ‘lukewarm’ but the truth of the matter is that I so often am. Lord, be merciful and keep that flame alive. How I yearn for that first love to be restored.
So many hopes and dreams dashed like a rickety wooden hut in the path of a powerful tsunami. As fallen humanity, disappointment is inevitable. Spring may come, but winter is just around the corner. Babies are born, but those lives too will one day come to an end … some sooner than others and all after a string of heartaches and disappointments. There is only one sure hope for mankind.
Jesus Christ is the firstborn. Even before the world was created, “He was with God in the beginning.” (John 1:2 NIV) He is one who never reached great heights during His short time on earth in terms of education, power or prestige, but the one in whom the redemption of mankind is ensured. It is in His resurrection that we are assured of our eternal future. “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits, then, when he comes, those who belong to him.” (1 Cor. 15:20-23 NIV)
Jesus Christ is the beginning … and He is also the end. ‘“I am the Alpha and the Omega”, says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”’ (Rev. 1:8 NIV)
Come quickly, Lord Jesus, and finish once for all this cycle of death and hopes dashed.
Come quickly, Lord Jesus, and usher in your kingdom.
