Little Billy Angel had just finished a long day at the 1st Angelic Academy on Heaven’s upper eastside. He should have been tired.
“What’s wrong Billy?”
“I’m afraid to fall asleep. Afraid I’ll have nightmares.”
His mother looked at him puzzled, “Nightmares about what?”
“About school stuff. What if I don’t make it or I’m not good enough? What if I don’t do well in flying class? Who ever heard of an angel that couldn’t fly right? What if I fly into trees or buildings?”
His mother did her best to just smile and hold back the snicker she felt, “Billy, you’re an angel. If you flew into a building, you’d fly through it.”
“Oh yeah. But what if I don’t make it in praise class? I’ve heard the other kids singing and some of them are already so good; they sound so amazing. What if I’m not good enough?”
Billy started to cry. His mother just held him, letting him rest in her arms for a little while. After some time passed she tried to encourage him.
“Billy, like I said, you’re an angel. You were created to be an angel. You’ll be fine in all those areas. Just move, walk, and even fly and sing in what you were created to be. You were created to be a source of glory and praise to the Master. It’s why you exist.”
“Really?”
“Yes sweetheart. Just like what the Lord tells the humans on Earth. He tells them they were created to give God praise and for good works. They were not created to mess up and neither were we. So we all need to make choices to walk in ways that line up with the purpose God created us for.”
“Is it really that easy?”
“It can be. You see Billy, when you make good choices; it’s easier to make more good choices. They’ll build on each other. When you make bad choices, well … then it gets a little harder. So just follow what’s natural for you Billy and you’ll be fine.”
“Is it the same for the humans?”
“Unfortunately, it’s not. For them it’s a little more complicated. You see, a long time ago, the first human made a really bad choice and forever changed what comes natural for them. So now for them to follow their natural instincts is not a very good idea.”
“Oh wow! What can they do?”
“They can give their hearts to the Lord and accept His sacrifice for their lives. When they do that, He gives them a new nature. So they then have the power to choose to follow it. I guess you can say they now need to follow their supernatural instincts.”
“Hmmm. I think I understand. So I’ll be okay mommy?”
“Yes dear, you will. Continue to make good choices, ones that line up with the reason you were created, and you’ll be fine. You will still face tough days or challenges for sure. But do that, my little angel, and you’ll never have a reason to be afraid.”
“Thanks mommy. Just one more question. Did an angel ever mess up as bad as that first human did?
“One did, a very long time ago. But that’s a story for another night. It’s late. Goodnight my darling.”
“Night mommy.”
His mother leaned over, kissed him, and tucked him in under his blanket. As she left the room quietly, Billy peacefully drifted off to sleep.
