Topic: Outgoing (05/05/11)
Coconut palms have a majesty all their own. The strong grey trunk of the trees holds up a head of long strong leaves. Clusters of coconuts nestle at the base of the leaves. They are green when young and orange as they mature and then dry up to a hardened brown nut. Inside, the nut is filled with sweet water. Cushioned by white meat of the coconut the kernel lies in the middle. This is the sprout, the life of the baby tree.

When the trade winds blow the trees are shaken to their roots. The coconuts are snatched and thrown into the sea. The eager waves rise up to catch them and playfully toss them to and fro. The nuts ride the waves and reach the sandy beaches of far away islands. Here they take root and grow up. Years pass by and the trees bear fruit that become nuts and fall around and soon line the beaches and make the islands beautiful. Thus coconut trees are found all over the tropical lands.

Today the word of God is broadcast allover the world by sound and sight, spoken and written. Yet it is still necessary for missionaries to go out and live among the people in order to know them personally, to care for them and to love them. Their mission needs the human touch – the expression of tender love and care.

This is not an option of many of us. Short term mission trips maybe an answer. However there are mission fields at our doorsteps. So many people around us do not know the redeeming grace of our Savior. It is time for all of us who have known Christ’s love, to be out going – going out of our way – reaching out of our comfort zone to those who are hurting. Material help may not be enough. There are needs our resources cannot satisfy.

But we do have a heart that is brimming with the love of Christ – with the faith that has seen us through difficult times – with hope for the future – with the joy of salvation – with peace that comforts when sorrows abound. These we can share only when we reach out and earn their trust and friendship.

An old hymn expresses these thoughts beautifully:
“You are the seed that will grow a new sprout,
You are the star that will shine in the night,
You are the yeast and the small grain of salt,
A beacon to glow in the night.
Go my friends, go to the world proclaiming
Love to all, messengers of my forgiving peace, eternal love.”

I truly enjoyed this story. So very true and descriptive. We are the seeds and we go where God leads us so He can use us effectively. Beautifully written and very enjoyable. Thank you.
