Jabez was born in pain. But he grew up to be an honorable man. One day he came before God and asked Him to bless him and to enlarge his territory. He did not stop with that. He asked that God’s hand will be with him and keep him from evil and that he may not cause pain. He was asking for a spiritual blessing. He knew that God was able to do more for him than grant worldly blessings.

When God asked the young King Solomon what he wanted, Solomon did not ask for worldly blessings. He asked for wisdom to rule God’s people.

The Syro-Pheonician woman asked for the breadcrumbs that fell from the table. She knew the power of the hand that gave those crumbs. She knew that Christ could heal her daughter.

The blind beggar Bartimaeus called unto the son of David asking for healing. He did not beg for alms because he knew who the Son of David was and He knew He had the power and authority to heal him.

And so throughout the Bible we read of men and women who were not satisfied with handouts. They knew the author and the source of their blessings. Like Oliver Twist they dared to ask for more. They did not want to stay in the mire and receive hand outs to make them comfortable there. They wanted to be lifted up onto the rock, onto firm ground. There they would stand up tall and straight and sing out God’s glory.

Many times I have asked God for things I considered very important and was disappointed when I did not get what I wanted. But later on I have realized that God had better things for me. I was asking for handouts when He had treasures for me. I was limiting the source, I was blocking the flow. In the Book of Malachi God says, “Try Me. If you will obey me, bring the tithes to my House, and be faithful, I will open the windows of heaven and will pour out for you such blessings that there will not be room enough to receive it.” If we know the source of our blessings we will not limit Him and be satisfied with handouts.
