Short toddler legs racing toward dad
“Not this minute, son, I’m too busy”
Quivering chin, tearful eyes, so sad
Book clutched in pre-school fingers
Hoping daddy will take a minute to read
But daddy’s preparing his sermon
Then visiting his parishioners in need
His baseball team made the playoffs
Champion pitcher, home run hitter was he
No daddy sitting up in the bleachers
Just couldn’t find a minute that was free
Good son - honor roll in high school
Star athlete, lead role in the school play
His daddy intended to be there
Obligations, church duties kept him away
College - feeling rejected, dejected, disconnected
A joint, a beer, hard drugs, partying
The euphoria soon gave way to addiction
Darkness, hopelessness, spiraling, plummeting
Broken, dad never meant this to happen
A kind, loving, and responsible man
Wounded heart, shattered hopes, guilt ridden
Contrite, asking God for another chance
Willing now to give of his minutes
Hours, days, weeks, months, or years
Aware that in tending the needs of others
He’d almost lost what was most dear
Restoration, renewed relationship came slowly
Moment by moment, healing, make amends
Father and son reunited, love flourished
Nurtured, never to be neglected again.
God’s calling for faithful servants
Harvest is plentiful, the workers too few
But our first ministry begins at home
Deceptive snare good people pursue
1 Timothy 3:5 “If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?” NIV
