Sudden shivers run pass Sonia’s spine. She shut her eyes and poised up her terrified bearing, She’d gone all the way.
She braved whatever unknown outcome would be.
Her eyes glued back to the page. Fighting back tears that had run dry that morning before she left her home. Not even sure if she’d go back.
Sonia envied the girls that showed on the page. The brochure that had allured her that said,” safe and compassionate...” gripped her heart to the core to make the choice that was rightfully hers.
Hers alone.
Hands sweating and cold, she stared closely at the page of the smiling young girls just like she was. And one pretty girl hugging her boyfriend caught her eye. The pictures seemed so real and too good to be true. They looked they had a life...after.<
I wish I were dead.
Sonia continued reading the brochure in the clinic, “safe and compassionate pregnancy termination.”
A nightmare! No, it was real. She was pregnant. And she hadn’t made it to her seventeenth birthday yet.
“Sonia VanDorski?” The call later broke into her darkest moments.
She was ushered into a brightly lit office room. The room felt cold despite the central heating, and her shuddering couldn’t be abated.
She drew her black coat in and folded her arms. Stretching her pallid
fingers. The “commitment ring” with Randy had left a tender and soft white ring spot on her finger.
A seat was offered to her. The room was set-up in a welcoming atmosphere.
Doctor Stokes didn’t waste any time. She went right into business.
“It’s alright Sonia, I’m Lucy Stokes. I’m your counsellor. I will be with you. And I will help you feel confident about yourself again once the procedure is done.” Doctor Lucy looked sympathetic.
“Yeah...I... um... the internet tells me that you can help me.”
She heaved a deep breath to compensate her raising heartbeat. Stammered out some incoherent reply.
“Now you told us in your email that you have been nine weeks with this fetus?”
This was it. The reality. She was really pregnant. And she was getting rid of it.
Dropping her voice to a mysterious whisper, “Yeah, I think about that time.”
“Hmmm. We will still decide on that from an ultra-sound we’ll conduct a bit later. And we’ll move on from there.”
Mind over the matter took charge. She asked, “What options will I have to go along with the abortion.” She cringed at the word, “abortion.”
“If you keep the fetus too long enough to have it done, say, pass twenty-four weeks, a surgical procedure is to be done.
Uhm... thankfully the law permits you to have it... aborted even up to full-term, as well.”
Sonia felt the audacity in the doctor’s advice. She understood clearly.
“Good news, Sonia, news of new legislation laws say that they fully decriminalize abortions in the first twenty-four weeks of pregnancy. “
Sonia grappled with reality. The door opened. Doctor Stokes signaled the nurse to take Sonia into another room for the ultra-sound—a standard procedure.
What difference did it make? They were going to terminate her pregnancy at any time, anyway.
She was let into a room to change her dress in to a pink-floral, backless gown.
Huh what was that? A leaflet whiffed down her bare feet.
A gospel tract dropped from her dress pocket. It must have been stalked into her pocket by people outside the clinic. Antiabortionist—Doctor Stokes mentioned about them.
Sonia knew it was a gospel tract because
she had handed many of them to people many times before.<
One look at it, she stowed it carefully and tightly in her hand. The nurse led her into the sonogram room.
For some reason, the nurse delayed in her coming.
As she lay there, fear came over her. An unusual fear enveloped her entire body. Not terrified as she had been before she resolutely entered the clinic. But reverent fear dictated her choice about killing her baby.
Killing? Baby?
Why, it’s only a foetus. A blob of lifeless blood. Nothing else.
Kill? My Baby?<
As she lay there, she examined the tract that read, “Fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are Thy works; and that my soul knoweth
right well.”
Further down the lines, “...Thou has covered me in my mother’s womb.”
She whispered, “Lord Jesus...”
