The husky voice of her new boyfriend, Roger, sent a shiver down Sally’s spine. He came up from behind, covered her eyes with his hands and kissed the top of her head. She giggled nervously as she pulled his hands away and turned to look into his steel grey eyes. “It’s always a new experience when I’m with you.” She smiled and pulled his head down close to hers. He kissed her long and hard.
“That’s real nice, but you know what I mean. I kept my part of the bargain. I got the stuff.” He lifted a small paper packet out of his shirt pocket. “Let the party begin.”
“I don’t know, Roger.”
“Aw come on you said you would. You know you’ll love it once you try it.” He nudged her playfully. “Would I lead you astray?”
A recurring vibrating sound came from the front pocket of Sally’s backpack. Sally pulled out her cell phone and flipped it open.
Roger pulled her close. “So is some other guy messing around with my lady.”
Sally grinned. “Not another guy. It’s my gramma.”
Roger pulled the phone out of her hand. “You’re stringing me along. Grammas don’t text. Mine wouldn’t even know how to turn a cell phone on.”
“Well, my gramma says she’ll do whatever it takes to keep in touch with her family. She does facebook and twitter too and even plays video games with us.”
Roger shook his head in disbelief as he read the message. “Take a look at the puppy the Lord put on my doorstep last night. I already love him—hope nobody claims him. Hope you are having a good day. I love you Sugar. Stay sweet. Love and prayers, Gram.”
Roger’s rolled his eyes in disdain. “Oh my how sweet—grammy and a puppy. Tell the old bag you’ve got your own life. Now let’s take flight, sweet sugar.”
Sally stared at the picture and the message on the phone. “Roger, I’m sorry.” Her voice was earnest, and she looked into his eyes. “I made a mistake. I thought I could do this. I wanted to feel that someone like you would be attracted to me. I thought it would make me feel really cool, but that’s not who I am.” She pointed to the phone. “Believe it or not, this is my world—loving Christian family, no drugs. I don’t belong with you. Please don’t be mad.”
Before he could answer, Sally grabbed her bag and ran.
