One day he said, “Karis, let’s play a game.” Karis loved games. The king took her to a magnificent castle. “My dear, you will stay in this castle for 70 minutes and hunt for treasure. There are many treasure boxes within these walls. You must find as many as you can, but only the ones with real treasure inside. When you are through, I will see how well you have chosen.”
Karis was delighted and fairly danced with excitement as she waited for her father to say “Go.”
The king was indeed right. There were boxes everywhere. Karis’s eyes lit on a beautiful box that appeared to be pure gold. “Oh.” Karis thought, there must be wonderful treasure indeed in such a beautiful box.”
She ran and opened the golden box to find it full of dirt and ashes. The movement of opening the lid sent the dirt flying all over the room. Karis sneezed heartily as she shut the lid and looked about her in dismay. Who would put such garbage in such a beautiful box? She thought the box itself must have value so she started to set it aside, but when she moved the fancy box, now black with dirt she found it light as a feather. It was only cardboard painted gold.
“That won’t do,” she thought and moved on to another box. It was oh so drab, it was almost ugly. She started to move it to see what was behind, but it felt heavy, and curiosity moved her to lift the lid. She gasped in awe as she looked at all the beautiful jewels sparkling inside. This was a treasure worth keeping. Who cared about the box?
The next box was as beautiful as the first. She eyed it cautiously. Would it also be filled with dirt? She decided to take a look. She lifted the lid ever so slowly, peeking warily inside. To her delight it was also filled with treasure.
Another box was very plain. She opened it freely thinking it would also have treasure, but it was filled with rotten fruit and bugs. She slammed the lid in disgust. And so it continued, as she went from room to room opening boxes. One was a beautiful silver box filled with fluff that flew all about the room. Another plain box appeared to be filled with gold coins, but on closer inspection they were only paper. Worst of all was a beautiful box that burst into flames when she lifted the lid.
When her father, the King, sounded the end of the seventy minutes, he was met by a dishevelled and wary princess. He was pleased as he looked at the boxes she had chosen to keep—some pretty, some plain, but all filled with real value inside.
“You have chosen well,” he said. “Remember this lesson when you are choosing your friends. It is only what is inside that really makes one valuable.”
“A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.” Matthew 12: 35 KJV
