I’m Author’s Novel, bright and spry
As polished quartz that shined,
Laid carefully on Author’s palm-
A seasoned writer’s pride.
Hardbound, pages edged color gold,
Spine with embossed title,
Engraved fonts on the front
Like a piece on a mantle.
There was quite a romantic story
Attaching to my novel name.
In the year before I was born,
A love affair lay claim.
You see, Writer’s manuscripts appeared
One day at ‘His Excellence’ Press .
In trunks, pages by thousands, cut,
Sifted, transformed, revised.
Rapport worked well with Editor
Not settled for failure.
Fitting for laureate wreaths,
Good Editor assured.
Good Editor foresaw the best:
A good Novel I’d be,
He chiselled away dross fragments,
Carved out new shape in me.
Writer was put through the grindstone,
It pained her, but, I changed-
Good as pristine, new Novel, borne
Out of Writer’s excellence.
Author’s Novel, shined bright with grace
As polished quartz that gleamed,
Laid carefully on Author’s palm, she smiled -
A seasoned author’s prize.
Out in the broad, I explored
The world with eyes that pried,
I set out- meet people I knew
Deeply well, I rallied and cried.
With loving hands, a mother browsed-
Tenderly, she held me-
Tears glint hope in her despairing,
Writer’s pain- I, too, heard the plea.
A famished hobo clutched me sore
In his cold palms, I trembled.
I could do for him, Writer knew-
To show him God is able.
While careless youth cared none for books,
Scoffed and pushed me aside.
Novel, that’s me, might capture-
His heart, from the dregs of life.
Grampa turned me into some good
Before letting us part.
The lingering love, comforted-
Writer’s words wisely pearled.
Years passed, I’m now old and musty-
Yet faith, hope, and love last,
Which Author wrote of them through me-
With years, teachable Writer prevailed fast,
Editor, most capable servant-
The unsung hero and faithful friend.
Good Editor, who needs ‘im?
Writer did, and blessed God for him.
Together they said of me,
“Novel, you are our great prize-
It is very good... very good indeed!”
