“Well, it's definitely different,” said Shayla smiling amusingly. She thought for a Moment, then added, “Maybe she color blind.”
“You ever seen a girl be color blind,” replied Joan. “She just different, but I like the girl. She bold.”
“But her pants are brown, and Color blind people often get purple and brown mixed up.”
“Girl please, even if the hat was brown, an old ladies church hat don't go wit no brown Jeans and T-shirt.”
Shayla covered her mouth and laughed.
Lyla noticed everyone staring at her. She smiled sheepishly as she headed towards Joan and Shayla.
She was the new girl in town and she was making quite a stir. She showed no shame, nor embarrassment as she walked past all the staring, giggling faces. In fact, at one point, she stopped and looking around at everyone, took off her purple hat, held it on her stomach and bowed. Then said, “What up, Y'all. I must look good the way y'all gaping.” a couple people quickly turned their heads embarrassed for her. But she could care less.
“Don't y'all be embarrassed. Jesus loves you,” she continued. She had her backpack on, but carried her Bible in her arms.
Approaching Joan and Shayla she gave them both a hug. “Y'all my girls cause I like the way you stood up to Mr. Hendricks in class yesterday. There is a God and we ain't come from no monkeys.”
“That's cool, but why the purple hat,” replied Joan.
“Girl, I love this hat. It was ma Grandma's hat. She wore it to church every Sunday. She was always trying to get me to go with her and I was like. .. 'No MomMom, that's yo thing, not mine.' Then she'd start preaching at me. Grandma... she was the woman though. Ain't nobody loved me like ma Grandma. Nobody, but God. That woman prayed so hard for me. She'd be fasten and all that, talk'en bout, One day you gonna meet God and He gonna change your life. And when He does, you gonna be radical for him. I was like, get out of here MomMom. I though she was crazy. But those prayers man, they haunted me. I'd be in my room and hear Grandma, down the hall in her room praying and calling out to Jesus. Then she'd start praying for me. She'd be like 'God, save Lyla. Open her eyes oh God. Reveal yourself to her oh God. Let her meet you now, while she young, so she can live for you God.' Then she be gone on and on. I'd be like shut up woman. Leave me alone.”
“Well, it looks to me like her prayers worked,” said Shayla.
Yea, they worked. How can you resist God when someone be praying like that. It breaks you down from the inside out. My Grandma died. And I had to come live with my mom. I don't even know her, nor do I want to, but I know that has to change now. She busy with her boyfriends and career and all, so I don't see her much. I take care of myself now. I miss MomMom so much, though. Three weeks ago mom brought Grandma's hat in and sat it on the bed with Grandma's Bible and some of her Christian books and stuff. She said, 'This stuff was your Grandma's, You want it or should I get rid of it.' I was thinking get rid of it, but instead, I said, 'I wanted it.' It's like all I have left of MomMom and MomMom loved me. That night I broke, Y'all. I just surrendered everything to God. I made up my mine, I'm gonna serve God with all my heart. I believe in all or nothing. Not all this halfway stuff, Y”all know what I mean.
“Yea, me too,” said Joan.
“Me three.” said Shayla
“There go the church girls,” Chuckled a girl as she walked by. Another commented, “You go Grandma, wit yo purple hat,” to Lyla.
Lyla took off her purple hat and looked at it, “To me, purple represents royalty. My Grandma was royal and now she's rejoicing in her royal kingdom. I'm royalty too,” she said as she placed it back on her head.
“Y'all know what.” Said Joan. “Tomorrow, we all gonna wear purple, Cause we all royalty.”
“Amen” said Shayla
“That's what's up,” Replied Lyla.

I love our God who is colorblind! You reminded me first of all of the scripture.
