It had been five years since we had had more then a dusting of snow in Beaver Creek. I had prayed this Christmas would be different so Angelica our 5-year-old daughter could actually experience the joy of playing in snow. I had told Angelica how beautiful snow was when the sunshine fell upon it as it came over the bluff. I told Angelica it looked like diamonds from heaven. She would giggle and laugh at my descriptions in wide-eyed wonder.

Peter was up early and went to the Rangers station to check with Jamie to see if all was quiet. Peter was on his way back to the house when Angelica came running down the stairs. As usual, she ran to the kitchen window to look for her daddy, but this time she would witness her first real snow fall. It started snowing after Angelica had gone to bed and now the ground was covered as well as all the big pine trees in crisp, clean, white snow.

“Mama come look out the window. Do you see! Do you see sparkling diamonds from heaven Mama? Oh, Mama Jesus sent us pretty diamonds for Christmas.” Angelica excitedly said.

“Yes Angelica Jesus sent us lots of pretty diamonds to look at this morning. Jesus loves us so much He sends us different seasons through the year but I think I love winter best. All the ugliness of the world is covered in a beautiful blanket of white.” I said chuckling.

Angelica had her nose practically on the window enraptured by the snow when she saw her daddy walking towards the front door. She squealed at the top of her lungs, jumped down from the chair, and ran excitedly towards the door.

“Daddy, Daddy did you see all those sparkly diamonds Jesus sent down from heaven? They are so beautiful I want to go outside to touch them. Can I go outside and touch them? Oh please, please daddy.” Angelica squealed with excitement.

Peter wrapped his arms around Angelica and gave her a big hug and kiss as our little angel squealed with delight.

“Daddy your nose is cold and red just like Rudolph’s.” Angelica said.

“Angelica those pretty diamonds that Jesus sent is cold and before you can go out to touch them we have to eat breakfast and then young lady Mama will dress you in your woolies as you call them. Will that be fine with you?” Daddy asked.

“Oh Daddy I’m so excited. Mama can we eat breakfast quickly because I want to go outside and touch those diamonds Jesus sent. Oh please, please Mama.” Angelica said.

After breakfast, I dressed Angelica in her heavy woolies putting on her fuzzy hat, mittens and boots and got on all my warm clothes before we ventured out for Angelica’s first experience of playing in snow.

“Oh Mama I’m so excited. I want to touch Jesus diamonds because they are so pretty. We can all do that Mama. Oh Mama I love you and daddy so much.” Angelica squealed excitedly.

Peter scooped Angelica up in his big arms, carried her out to the end of the walk, and stood her in the fresh snow. She looked around and finally bent down to touch the snow. The look on her face was one of wonder and joy.

“Oh Mama, Daddy it’s so soft. It’s soft like our baby rabbits. Mama can I taste the snow? It won’t hurt me will it?” Oh, Mama, Daddy it’s starting to snow. Look at all the flakes and it smells so fresh just like you said it would Mama.” Angelica said.

Peter showed Angelica how to make snow angels, snowballs, and snowmen. Angelica and I threw snowballs at Peter and we enjoyed our first snowball battle. It wasn’t long before Angelica said she was getting cold and Peter picked up Angelica who was giggling and laughing at all the fun, we had playing in the snow. We all gathered around the fireplace and drank hot chocolate. Angelica sat in Peter’s lap with her head against his chest with his big arms wrapped around our precious angel. Our little family was so blessed and this Christmas was magnificent.

“Oh Mama, Daddy playing in the snow sure is fun. Daddy snow is cold and your nose turns red. I like making snow angels, snowballs and snowmen but you sure get cold and tired Daddy.” Angelica said as she fell asleep in her daddy’s arms.
