Needing a place of quiet to think.
I abandoned all cares, or so I believed,
But despair concealed in my baggage
Showed me how gravely I was deceived.
Anxiety plundered my daytime moments,
Invaded my nighttime with visions.
Shadows enveloped the rays of sunshine,
Imprisoned my very heart and soul,
Stole from me all that I once called mine.
I staggered in darkness, colliding with others,
Groping and stumbling along that road.
Fellow companions in desperation,
Seeking the highway to Happiness,
But never finding that destination.
A perilous side street led to Golgotha.
The signpost suggested I follow.
I chose to abandon that shack on the lane
And crawl to the cross on the knoll,
Determined to get there despite the pain.
God in that journey provided a Savior
And a Counselor guiding the way.
He furnished a lamp so that I could observe
That He was directing my footsteps.
He asked me to trust and serve.
The baggage abandoned along the path
Suggests this route is not easy.
He lifts me to mountaintops; I bask in His grace.
The peace I was seeking is present
Whenever my focus is on His face.
Now the highway I tread is called Holiness,
Peppered with valleys along its length.
Without His dear Presence to lead me by hand
My heart would have failed me many times,
But He promised a dwelling in Gloryland.
