(Matthew 14:22-33)
Pulling hard the heavy oars,
Each sharp new breath’s intake
Took them further from the shores
On Galilee’s deep lake.
The twelve felt some security
Within familiarity.
Yes, safely in the boat’s confines
They knew no consternation.
The storm approached – they knew the signs -
But still their conversation
Was filled with awe-struck mystery
At what they’d witnessed recently.
Rowing grew harder hour by hour,
Mid-lake and right off-course,
The storm and waves increased in power,
The wind was at gale-force.
Then terrifying, fearful sight: -
A Ghoul-like ‘Phantom of the Night!’
Their cry of terror filled the sky.
Immediately they heard
‘Be not afraid for it is I’
Their much-loved Master’s Word.
It was enough to hear His voice,
To know Him near made them rejoice!
But not so Peter. His one clear
Deep longing, not denied:
‘It’s not enough just to be near,
I must be at His side.’
‘The stormy sea and waves are rough.
Jesus says ‘Come’ – that is enough.’
Impetuous Peter left the boat
And walked upon the waves.
His step was firm, he kept afloat
With eye on Him who saves.
But then he focussed on the sea
And sinking cried out, ‘Lord Save Me.’
At once the Saviour took His hand
‘Your faith and trust is small.
Why did you doubt I’d help you stand?
Am I not Lord of all?’
He stilled the stormy waves they’d trod,
All knew He was the Son of God.
They learned a lesson deep that day
A lesson we should own.
Do we prefer to safely stay
Within our comfort zone?
Or, like dear Peter, long to be
Out in our Saviour’s company?
Lord increase my outward ear,
To hear your call of ‘Come’,
And by your side stay always near,
Until you call me home.’
Help me obey and not to doubt
And trust you wholly, in or out.
