My youngest daughter, Katie, is nineteen years old now, but when she was younger, she was extremely hyperactive. In the summer time, she would constantly be going in and out of the house all day long. One day I counted that, she went in and out the door thirty times in an hour’s time.
“Come on Katie, will you either stay inside or go outside and stay in or out for a while.”
“You don’t need to be coming in and out every two minutes!”
Why don’t you call one of your friends and go over and play with them for a while?” I told Katie.
“I don’t want to go play with Susan or Johnnie right now!” Katie told me
“I am waiting for Daddy to come home and take me to the mall!”
“Daddy said when he gets home; he will run me to the mall to get a new outfit for Sally’s birthday party tomorrow night.” Katie whined.
“Katie, YOUR DAD WILL NOT BE HOME FOR ANOTHER TWO HOURS!” I screamed at her in total consternation.
“Why don’t you go take a nap and maybe Dad will be home when you wake up!” I exclaimed at Katie.
“No! I don’t want to take a nap!” Katie cried. Cyndy will bug me and want to play patty-cake and I I I don’t want to to play with with her now!”
“Katie why can’t you just go lay down on the bed with her for a few minutes and turn the TV channel to Disney and watch “Pooh Corner” with Cyndy! “ “She likes Pooh Corner and she probably will get interested in the program that she won’t bug you.” I told Katie.
Katie went stumping all the way up the stairs into her bedroom with Cyndy. It was with in a few minutes Johnnie came down and wanted Katie to come out and play in his pool with him. Katie ended up going outside and playing with Johnnie for three hours before she realized that the two hours and one more hour had passed by. When she started having fun, she lost track of time and had finally begun to enjoy herself playing in the pool with Johnnie. When she finally came home, she found her father home and ready to take her to the mall to get a new outfit and a birthday gift for Sally.
That was one day I thought Katie was going to never go play outside and stay out for a while. It was either she wanted a drink or go potty or get a toy. She had let in the house a zillion flies before that day was over.
I thought that Katie would never give me a break and either stay in and play in her room or go outside and play for a while. The door was constantly opening and slamming shut. “Mommy I want a drink! I want a popsicle! I want my doll to play outside with!”
Bless Johnnie for being bored and wanting Katie to come play in his pool that day! At least Katie quit opening and closing the door and I was able finally kill all the flies that she had let in before her Dad had gotten home from work
