To a king who ruled by tyranny
Leave safe England for the unknown
Their homeland to forever disown
Colonists left to have religious freedom
They meant freedom of, not freedom from
So they set out becoming Pilgrims
A rough journey and future grim
From the thirteen, people moved west
Forgetting, it seems their original quest
Colonists left to have religious freedom

Much has changed in 232 years
A country united by new fears
Schoolchildren are no longer led in prayer
While an atheist sues over inaugural prayer
Colonists left to have religious freedom

Shopping centers are now open on Sunday
Schools have had their Bibles taken away
United States of America now divided
Our country has become so misguided
Colonists left to have religious freedom
They meant freedom of, not from
