So, who are you, really? I’ve never seen this side of you before. We’ve known each other for years, but I don’t really know you at all. How can you do this? How can you just walk away from this like it doesn’t exist at all?

You’re the one that seems to think it’s a real life, no one else does.

But it’s important to me. Why can’t you see that? Why don’t you care what matters to me, why do I always have to do things your way. Do what you think is important. Just this once I’d like to do something my way.

Yes, I know, but believe me, it isn’t nearly as much fun as it sounds. Trust me, I know what I’m telling you.

I just want to experience it for myself. I’m tired of taking everyone else’s word for things. I want to do this myself. I’m tired of just trusting you; I need to do this my way.

I only want what’s good for you, you know. I’m trying to protect you.

No, you’re not, you just won’t let me grow-up, you want to keep me a kid forever. Well, I’m tired of being a kid, of being your “child”. When do I get to stop taking orders and making my own decisions?

You need to make wiser decisions. I plan to continue to help you do what is best.

Best for who? Best for you? Maybe that’s not what I think is best for me, have you ever thought of that?

Of course I have. I’m only here because I want what’s best for you.

Then stop playing games with me. Help me, instead of putting roadblocks in my path.

Son, it’s not a game, we’re not playing Twenty Questions or Who Am I? or Charades. I’ve already told you who I am. I’ve told you several times, now. This isn’t a new side of me at all; you’re just refusing to accept what you know. Because I won’t help you do things your way you think I’m stupid, or uncaring, or trying to make life hard for you. Have you ever stopped to think that life isn’t just about YOU? That it’s about things that are beyond your understanding?

Yeah, right, here we go again I’ve heard this song and dance so many times I can recite it in my sleep.

Actually, Jason, you are. The only time you talk to me anymore is in your sleep. You don’t really know who I am because you won’t spend any time with me anymore. This crazy future you have all planned out is just that, crazy. Look, I’ve already created a plan for you. One based on reality, one that will take you much farther than yours will. I’ve already provided everything for you that you need to get there, and to be successful. Being a beach bum isn’t a life, it’s escaping from life. You can’t spend your whole life chasing after the next big wave, trying to ride it in. I know it’s important to you, and you’re good at riding the waves, but one of these days, you’re going to hit one bigger than you. You will crash, big-time.

Fine, then I guess I’ll just crash. I’m young, I’m tough, and I’m smart. I can ride any wave out there. I can ride any wave you can create. You think just because you created the world that you get to control it all. Well, I can do this! I’ll show you! I will, tomorrow I’ll show everyone.

“It’s okay Jason, you can go back to sleep. We’re right here. We’ll be here when you wake up.”

God, I really messed up again, didn’t I?

Yes Jason, but your mom was telling you the truth, you’re going to be all right. Life will be a little different now, after your accident, but I promise, I won’t walk away from you.

Okay, so what is this plan you have for me, anyways?

Just follow me, son follow me.
