Topic: Memory (07/10/08)
A simple candy wrapper. Most people would have thrown it out, I would too except this one held a memory for me that I didn't want to forget. She was my first love, the first to hold my heart in her hands and when I was with her, the world just floated away.

It was the last night of the summer, tomorrow we leave for different colleges in different states. It would also be the last night of our romance, we both knew it, but we were leaving that unsaid, and now it was time to say goodnight. I pulled up to the curb in front of her house, as always per her father's strict rule, I had her home by midnight. I turned to kiss her goodnight, but instead of leaning in all puckered up, she pulled a Hershey's kiss from her purse. I watched as she slowly unwrapped it, trying hard not to tear the silvery wrapper. She then laid the flattened wrapper on the dashboard. She put the kiss between her lips and after letting it slowly melt in her mouth, she gave me a sweet chocolaty goodbye kiss. Without a word she got out of the car and ran inside before I could react. As I start the car, I notice that during our final kiss, she left my class ring on my car's console. I place the ring on my finger and notice how heavy it feels. The evening breeze scoots the candy wrapper over to me. I pick it up and look at it through the tears in my eyes.

No, I won't throw this wrapper away. Instead of wrapping itself around a piece of candy, it wraps a sweet memory.

Whoever thinks you can't pack a lot into just a few words is absolutely wrong! And this proves it! Very well done! I could picture it all so clearly, as well as feel it. Well done!!

Such a sweet memory and a great memento to remember it by. You had me there in the car with the couple, feeling the elephant in the room of not wanting to say good-bye.

This is a delightful and very 'sweet' story. It needn't be long to pack a powerful punch. I guess it's true that good things come in little packages! :)
