Topic: In-Law(s) (05/08/08)
I did not meet my in-laws before we were married. We had two small children when I first met mom and dad Sheldon. God is so awesome how He places us in situations that will truly bless us. Meeting my in-laws for the first time way back in 1966 was one of the most life changing experiences I have had. I came from a small close-knit family. My husband had seven brothers and one sister. Whoa! I had inherited a large family over night. I entered my marriage with an open mind and did not have any preconceived ideas as to how my husband’s parent should be. My in-laws were wonderful. Mom welcomed me warmly and we became friends. Dad was a little reserved but I felt as if I was part of his family from day one. I was blessed with wonderful in-laws. True we did have our moments but that is all part of life.

How sad when married couples are estranged from each other’s parents. The wife can’t stand his parents and he can’t stand her parents. They have erected a barrier all because of differences. Dear ones you did not marry each other’s parents but the love of your life. My mother taught me a very important lesson when I married. She said that this was my life and if you create a bed of roses or a bed of thorns that was between my husband and me. I will not interfere in your lives. If you ask my advice, I will give it but do not expect me to live your life. His parents love him as much as I love you. Treat them with respect.

I have just one question I would like to ask each of you. Before you answer think about and search your heart for the answer. Do you love your in-laws as much as you love your own family? I have seen so many married couples estranged from their in-laws and that truly breaks my heart. We are to love our families and respect them. Your in-laws are your husband’s parents. Love them unconditionally. If you follow that simple advice than you like myself will be blessed with a relationship with your in-laws blessed by God

I wrote a poem in honor of my in-laws and I would love to share it with you.

“My in-laws”

Lord, when I married I didn’t realize that through
You I had been truly blest..
You have given me such beautiful in-laws
and to me they are the very best.

I never really gave it a thought
or really ever cared but Lord
when I think of it, look at all
the wonderful love we’ve shared.

The difference between our families
was evident from the start.
However, through the years that followed his
family became intricately entwined within my heart.

Lord I want to thank you for my in-laws.
My life has been enriched in so many ways.
They are unique, wonderful people and because
of them, I give You all the praise.

You are very right. We are to show the love of Jesus Christ to all people, including our in-laws. Marriage should be a blessing for both sides of the family that are involved, and I see no reason why people should let differences keep them from enjoying the company of their in-laws.

Nice job. I think it could have been even better if you had illustrated the advice...
