Zach and I have always shared a special bond that most people wouldn’t understand. To them it would seem unnatural to be so close to a sibling. We don’t care. We live life the way that we feel God intended it to be.
Sometimes, being close to my brother can be problematic. We do everything together and often end up disagreeing over petty things. A good example of that occurred last week when we wanted to go out for dinner…
“I want pizza, Travis.”
“Well I want burritos, Zach.”
“So Chinese then?”
“Sure, why not.”
People think that “twins” means we are identical in every way. While we do share many similarities, we each have our differences too. Zach is left handed, and I am right handed. We tried out for the school football team last year. We both made the cut, but our performance was lacking. We would run for the same catch, which usually resulted in both of us missing the ball. Occasionally, one of us would manage to reel it in with one arm (his left or my right) and run for the goal line. We only scored a combined total of three touchdowns for the season. Zach blames me. He says that he wanted to try out for a defensive position, and it was my idea to be wide receivers.
School is another area of conflict. I am the studious bookworm. Zach is the slacker. During study nights, fights break out…
“ICE ICE BABY!”
“Zach! I am trying to study here! I have a big math test tomorrow!”
“I’M COOKING MCs LIKE A POUND OF BACON!”
“Zach! Shut up! That song is so lame anyways. Who listens to Vanilla Ice anymore?”
“Huh? Did you say something, Travis?”
The nice thing about having my brother around all the time is that I don’t ever get lonely. It is usually the other way around. Sometimes I wish he would go away, especially when he embarrasses me…
“Zach, don’t look now, but Megan Stark, the hottest girl in school, is coming near our table.”
“Dream on, Travis. She wouldn’t want to talk to us. She thinks we are a couple of freaks.”
“You’re wrong. She’s headed our way.”
“Hi Zach! Hi Travis!”
“Um, hi Megan. What’s up?”
“Not much I just…what’s that smell?”
“That was all Travis. Look at that chili dog he’s eating. I told him that thing wasn’t going to agree with him, but he got it anyways.”
“Eww! Gross! See you guys later.”
“Megan, wait!”
Yes. My brother likes to fart and blame it on me. He claims it’s me breaking wind, but I guess its pointless trying to determine the culprit. Regardless, it makes it really hard to score a date. It’s probably better that I don’t go on dates though. My brother would end up following me, and his obnoxious ways would surely deter any girl from wanting to see me a second time.
I know I am being a bit harsh towards my brother. He has plenty of good traits as well. He is the one who prompted me to try out church. I didn’t want to go, but he reached over and grabbed my leg and dragged it all the way through the parking lot and into the building.
I remember that first visit to God’s house very well. It was three years ago. I was angry with God, because I didn’t like how he had created me. Much ridicule had come my way from my peers, leaving me feeling worthless. I sat listening to the pastor speak of Jesus and his love for all people. The blind man, the leper, even the dead man, he cared for. Zach and I both accepted Jesus into our hearts that day, and our lives slowly began to change together. Two brothers, whose physical bodies had been conjoined at birth, were now fusing their spiritual bodies together with God.
“Which brings me now to the present day. I guess it’s only fair to let Zach share his side of the story too…Take it away brother!”
“Thank you Travis. Now here’s my explanation regarding the whole fart situation…”
