Easter heralds the advent of springtime. It is a time of renewal and regeneration, a time of rejuvenation and rejoicing. All life bursts forth. The seeds that lay hidden under the dark and dank earth are now ready to reach the light above the earth as plants or flowers and revel in their glory of colorful array . The flowers in all their magnificent beauty share their fragrance with the world and attract the other creations of nature. The birds warble, sing and whistle. The bees hum and drone, and the butterflies with iridescent wings flit from flower to flower to add to this resplendent scene.
A spring in the steps of the pedestrians shows promise of a hope of things to come. A smile on the faces of people going about their business encourages others to share a feeling of warmth. Is it by accident that Easter comes at this time? a time of fulfilment, a time when Christians look to the risen Christ to bring them peace? No, it is all part of God’s divine plan. It coincides with the end of darkness of sin that engulfed man until the day of Calvary when Christ shed His blood on the Cross for us. He too lay in the dark tomb, laying down His life for us until, as He prophesied, He will rise again . He promised His disciples that He would send a comforter, the Holy Spirit, to intercede for them, and, of course, us.
It is a time for reflection. Like the seeds buried in the ground, in darkness, in oblivion, we too can bury our haunted past, our bitter memories, our petty hates, our gnawing anger. We can burst forth in the light of the love of Christ, who died for us. “I am the resurrection and the life” (John ll:25). The two men walking on the way to Emmaus on the dusty road felt their hearts burn within them. The Stranger who had joined them had brought with Him light, life and love.. If they were not so taken up with the momentous events of the day, they might have recognized Him. The Resurrected One was in their midst, but they didn’t ‘see’ Him, the Light of the world. He came to give Life and to give it abundantly, and to share His Love for us and with us. ”As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love.” (John 15:9)
Easter is such a joyful time. The spirit is lifted. We sing in praise “Christ our Lord is Risen Today. Hallelujah! We forget momentarily the agony and the extreme suffering Our Lord and Saviour experienced on our behalf. We move past Satan’s deceptive wiles and cunning, because we have an advocate. One who won the victory over the devil’s schemes and machinations, yes, He who can proudly say “I have conquered the world”. It is for us who are resurrected in Christ to carry out His message of love and peace, to share His message with the world, to dispel the darkness of doubt and fear. By our example, we must change lives so that others can enjoy the fruit of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Let us thank God for His Resurrection that changed our lives because of those who went before us to pave the way. Hallelujah!
