"What," one might ask,"did the quiet, reserved carpenter from Nazareth see in the loud, boisterous fisherman from Bathesda?" And in turn, "what praytell might a bronzed fisherman who swaggered when he walked and cursed like a sailor find in common with the humble ex-carpenter that was now a teacher? Aside, of course, from the fact that they were both hard working blue collar workers?"
If Jesus and Peter had lived in a modern generation, we might assume they met and became friends at the Union Hall where Longshoremen, Bricklayers and Carpenters come together for meetings and companionship with like workers. Or, perhaps an Elks Lodge or Lions Club.
But No, one day Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee and saw a man who He knew could fish for men and later feed His sheep. Then came the mutual respect, love and truth that made them pals, buddies and friends for Eternity!
Peter saw Jesus turn water into wine at a wedding party, he was with Jesus at a party where a lady of ill repute washed His Master's feet and then dried them with her hair; he followed his friend to the palace where he denied Him three times - and then when his friend looked at him with such love...Peter fell apart and went out and wept bitterly.
Peter changed his lifestyle, but not over night. It took him over three and a half years of elbowing with the Son of God, the Savior of the world, Before he learned to hold his temper, keep check of his tongue, or change his ways.
Jesus had affectionately nick-named His friend "Peter" - which means a rock or stone. And today Peter is still known as the solid Rock of CHRISTianity.
The Carpenter and the Fisherman? No, I think of them as Jesus and His beloved friend or the Savior and the sinner...and it gives me, This Writer, Hope!
