Who am I? I can vaguely remember,
They shaved my head then gave me a number.
Tears burn inside me each hour, each day,
The congregation encourages me all the way.
Who am I? I sit on the fringe,
Like this ancient chapel door that has lost its hinge;
No one to love, no one to trust
Support and encouragement they are a must.
Who am I? Eight months I’ve done,
Many have come but only few have gone;
All men sing ‘When I get home’,
Encouraging my soul so ill and forlorn.
My mother visits when she is able,
We eat and drink at a tiny table.
She joins in the singing of the congregation,
‘When I get home’, I’ll be true to my nation.
‘When I get home’ my gospel creed,
Encouraging words growing like a seed.
Daily I’ll do even one good deed,
Supporting my brothers, we are sinners in need.
