Jennifer didn’t want to go to bed way up in the highest steeple in her grandparents’ old house. Grandma Sue wondered what she was afraid of. Grandpa Ralph was also concerned about why she was afraid to go to bed.
“I am afraid to go up into that tall steeple,” Jennifer said. “I am not a baby, but there is just something about being way up there. It is so far from both of you.”
“Why don’t we go up together first,” said Grandma Sue. “We will check everything along the way. Then you will see there is nothing to be afraid of.”
“I’ll go with you also,” said Grandpa. “You will be able to see the stars because you will be almost as high as the sky. There is nothing up there except a pretty room with a soft bed and a nice lamp so you can read for awhile.”
“Okay,” Jennifer said. “I will go up there if both of you go with me, but I’m not sure I’ll stay.”
They began the trek – up to the second floor. They checked out the four rooms and found nothing except lovely bedrooms. Then on up to the third floor, which was a little smaller, with only two rooms. One room was a kind of storage room with a lot of books, some older furniture and several boxes that had been closed.
“What’s in those boxes?” Jennifer asked. “I feel like I need to know.”
“Let’s see if there is anything written on the boxes,” said Grandma. She proceeded to look at the side of one box, and written there with a black marker it said: “Important papers, birth certificates, etc.”
Jennifer had to bend down and read it for herself. “So, I suppose all of these boxes have important papers in them.”
“Let’s climb up to the top now,” said Grandma. “This is a short stairway. And here is your room, Jennifer. The perfect room for a pretty girl like you.”
“How beautiful,” Jennifer said. “This looks like a room for a princess. But why – why do I feel so safe and happy in this room? It’s not like any other room in this house. I will definitely sleep here tonight and every other night I’m here.”
After Grandma Sue and Grandpa Ralph left the tower room, Jennifer was sure she heard a small voice call: “Daughter of mine, why are you so fearful, for I am with you always.” Then Jennifer recalled her Sunday School lesson last week. It told how Jesus is always with his children, and that He will never leave them.
After saying a prayer and thanking Jesus for being there for her, Jennifer got into bed. She could hear the gentle wind as it moved through the tree branches. Before going to sleep, Jennifer had one last thought: I’m closer to Heaven up here and it’s beautiful. There is just enough moonlight coming in my window so it’s not completely dark.
“Thank you, Jesus,” she whispered.
“And Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men." NKJ Women's Study Bible, Luke 5:10
