“You can’t come with us. You’re too little and you don’t hop fast enough,” Bruce Bunny told her. “Stay here on the farm.”
Bonnie was irate. She didn’t like being left behind while everyone else had fun.
“I wonder if anybody will play with me,” she thought. She bounced over to the pond where the ducks gathered.
“Will you play with me, please?” Bonnie questioned the ducks.
“You can’t swim with us. You don’t have webbed feet,” Darius Duck said. He held up his foot for her to see.
Bonnie was furious. She headed toward the barn. On the way, she met Sheila Sparrow.
“Sheila, will you play with me, please?” Bonnie inquired.
“You can’t fly with me. You don’t have wings,” Sheila said. She spread her wings and flew away. Bonnie was cross.
In the barn, she found Harmon Horse munching on some hay.
“Harmon, will you play with me, please?” Bonnie requested.
“Sorry, I can’t play with you. I’m too old to run around outside with a young rabbit,” Harmon said.
Bonnie was irritated. She bounded across the barn to find Carrie Cat.
“Carrie, will you play with me, please?” Bonnie appealed.
“I have to stay here and watch my kittens. They are too young to be left alone,” Carrie said, licking her paws.
Bonnie was bothered by not being able to find anybody to play with in the barn. She scampered outside and over to the pigpen.
“Pierre, will you play with me, please?” Bonnie wondered.
“I can’t leave the pen. The gate is locked. You know, you are lucky you aren’t stuck in here,” Pierre said.
Bonnie was annoyed. She liked being able to hop around, but it was lonely without anyone to play with. She was running out of choices.
Ginah Goose sat next to Pierre’s pen. Bonnie scuttled over to her.
“Ginah, will you play with me, please?” Bonnie pleaded.
“I can’t leave my eggs. I have to sit here until they hatch. Why don’t you find Lucie? I think she’s on the hill behind the barn,” Ginah said.
Bonnie was not pleased, but thanked Ginah and scurried to find Lucie Lamb.
“Lucie, will you play with me, please?” Bonnie implored.
“Sure, I’ll play with you, Bonnie. Let’s see who can leap the highest.”
Bonnie was thrilled that she finally found a friend. She and Lucie played, leaping and springing on the hill. When they were tired, they giggled and munched on grass. They played until dinnertime.
Back in the Bunny Burrow, Bruce apologized to his sister. “Bonnie, we are all sorry we didn’t let you come with us. You can join us tomorrow.”
Bonnie smiled. “No, thank you. I’m going to spend the day with my new friend, Lucie Lamb. Maybe the day after tomorrow.”
