“Women, they are just females,” she says, “but a lady shows herself to be ‘proper’ in every situation. She is gentle as a sparrow, yet possesses such inner strength. She’s a sparrow when she’s broken, but she’s an eagle when she flies.”
Part of being a true lady for my mother was being a prayer warrior for her family. She is strongest when she is on her knees.
My mother wanted her children to believe in their abilities. That belief in us, lifted us when goals seemed out of reach.
“You can do anything that you set your mind to do. You are good as the best and better than the rest. Never forget that,” Mama said.
She is tender, yet able to reach down deep and find the tough love when it is needed. Sometimes that meant allowing us to learn from our hurts. When my “first love” broke up with me she reminded me, “Even though it is puppy love, it is real to the puppy.”
“I can’t” is not in our vocabulary. Like the woman in Proverbs 31, my mother worked hard and did what needed to be done. I once helped her cut a tree down in our front yard to prevent it from falling on the house. It was Mama vs. the Tree. Mama weighed in at 5 foot 2 inches tall, and 100 pounds; The Tree weighed in at 30 feet tall. She knocked down that tree with careful moves by tying a chain to the riding lawnmower, attaching it to the tree, and slow and steady, Mama rode that mower and pulled down that tree, without it falling on the house.
A lady must also be respectful, of herself, and of others. With one son and five daughters, she and Daddy taught us respect.
One of life’s rewards for Mama, as it is for most ladies, is being able to practice her deep love for children. With twenty grandchildren, vying for her attention, she gets plenty of practice being Nana. There are sporting events and dance recitals to attend, not to mention the many shopping trips.
Whatever joys and storms in life's endeavors, I am deeply blessed that my Lord gave me such loving parents, and in this case, a true lady for a mother.
Where would any of us be without a "prayer warrior" for a mother? There were nights that her prayers surely turned a possible auto accident into nothing more than a close call. I am so thankful that she has kept that hedge around me constantly in life. As a mother of three, I have such a deeper appreciation for her innumerable sacrifices throughout my life.
Thank you, Jesus, for my godly mother. Please, continue to bless her ladylike socks off.

Such a heartfelt tribute to your mother! Your description of her reminds me of my own mother, petite but strong and a woman after God's own heart. Thank you for sharing with us your love and respect for this admirable woman.
