For the third time, I pointed and pleaded.
Weak feet shuffled toward the open door.
September’s storm caught us by surprise.
Dark gray clouds collected overhead.
Approaching rain fragranced evening’s air.
Departing sun’s radiance remained.
Burgundy brushed between the clouds.
Gold and orange grazed the edges.
In the center of the cloud-clogged sky,
A rainbow’s vibrant arc of colors
Spread its arms and embraced evening’s storm.
We marveled at God’s artistry,
Even as the breeze increased, and
Raindrops pelted summer’s parched soil.
“Papa, doesn’t this look like we’re in Hawaii?”
His head bobbed like a wind-up toy’s closing moments.
His voice pilfered by a tumor’s tangled fingers.
Weary, he returned indoors for dinner.
Silver stubble sprinkled on his scarred head.
Brown sweater draped across sagging shoulders.
I whispered to Heavenly Papa,
“How many more sunsets will he see,
Before embracing eternity?”
September’s storm caught us by surprise.
Doctor’s swift cancer diagnosis
Thundered against the hospital walls.
In the depth of my sorrow-clogged heart,
God’s Spirit soothed my questioning soul.
He quieted my personal storm.
“Don't worry about tomorrow.
It will take care of itself.
You have enough to worry about today.”
Only sixty days later
Papa’s twilight turned to night.
He entered eternity.
During the storm of my mourning,
Heavenly Papa softly said,
“Come outside and see the sunrise.”
