Abby walked fast on her way back to her dorm. It seems like a long way back to the dorm when it’s late, she thought. The night was dark – no moon – only the campus lights shone from their posts. She could hear her own foot steps as she hurried down the path. She stopped for a minute and waited to hear any other night sounds. There it was, another pair of footsteps behind her. She began to run. It was then she heard a voice call out, “No, don’t be afraid. Wait and I will walk with you.”
“Whew, you are really in a hurry,” the young man said coming up beside Abby. “I hope I didn’t frighten you too badly, I just wanted make sure you get to your dorm safely at this late hour.”
“I don’t think I’ve seen you on campus before,” she said. “Are you new here, or have I just missed meeting you?”
“I have just transferred from Lincoln U, and thought this would be a good time to get acquainted with the campus layout; you know, when it’s quiet.”
Just then Abby noticed a member of the campus police standing under a light. “Out kinda late aren’t you, Abby?” He asked.
“I had to do some work at the library, and just lost track of time. These term papers are sure tough sometimes,” she said.
Abby and the stranger continued on. “What’s your name,” she asked.
“You can call me Tim,” he said – “Tim Rogers – nice to meet you, Abby”
Abby felt a little uncomfortable with Tim. “It’s not much farther, so I think I’ll be fine alone,” she said. “You had better get back to your dorm also so you can make classes in the morning.”
Abby looked up at the sky and noticed a few stars showing from behind a cloud. She prayed silently: “Dear Lord, be with me now, take away this strange feeling that has come over me. I do not know Tim, and I pray he has good intentions.”
“Oh, that’s okay – I’m used to sleeping only six hours – I’ll be fine.”
“Well, here’s my dorm just up there in that building on the right, so thank you and I hope to see you again.”
Abby stopped, smiled and waved slightly, then turned to walk away. Tim walked around in front of her, arms out. “Just a minute, not so fast,” he said.
Abby’s voice caught in her throat. “Why are you doing this?” She asked. “It’s just a few feet to the dorm. Now let me pass.”
Tim looked at her longingly and shook his head. “I just wanted to be sure I would recognize you if we meet again on campus – I wanted to get a good look at you. Good night, then.”
As Abby walked on towards her dorm, she noted that Tim was watching her until she went inside the main doors. She could feel him watching without turning. She hurried up to her room and locked the door and checked the windows. She wondered why she was so fearful.
Sleep did not come easy for Abby, but she managed to get a few hours. Upon awakening, she turned on the television. She wasn’t watching nor listening carefully, when she heard a news reporter state there was a campus stalker/rapist and possibly murderer on several campuses within a radius of several hundred miles in the last few days. Abby walked into the bedroom and turned up the volume. The reporter continued to give a general description of the man – about eight feet tall, about 175 pounds, with blonde curly hair and brown eyes. It fit Tim’s description as far as she could remember. What should I do, she thought. Her hand shaking, she picked up the phone and dialed the campus police.
The officer she spoke to sounded shocked. He said, “He has been arrested, but not until he had murdered a coed on another campus not too far from here. This happened in the wee hours this morning. He says his name is Timothy Rogers, and you’re saying he walked you to your dorm last night. Whew.”
After Abby hung up, she fell to her knees. “Oh dear Lord, You were watching over me – thank You. I guess I should say You walked me to my dorm last night, protected me from this man."
