“I’m going shopping now,” Celia said to Daniel. “I’ll be back in a few hours. Will you be okay?”
Daniel nodded. “Caleb and Nathanial will be here soon. You are such a good wife. Go, now, and enjoy your time away.”
Celia met up with Deborah at the marketplace. “Today will be great, Celia. The merchants from India will be here with new satins and silks. I’m going to make a new dress. What about you?”
“I need some strong solid material for Daniel. I will look for that, and then find some vegetables for today’s stew.”
“Celia, you’re so practical. Daniel is blessed to have you for a wife. Come, let’s browse for a while.”
Celia and Deborah spent the next several hours poring over the goods, finding just the right material that each of them needed.
“What do you think of this purple? Isn’t it lavish and exquisite? It will look lovely as a dress. And this gold is woven with so many colors. I think I will use it for a bedspread. What did you find?”
Celia held up heavy dark colored material. “This will be perfect. It’s solid, strong, and will last a long time. It’s just what Daniel needs.”
“And incredibly boring. But I know it will serve its intended purpose. Shall we pick out some vegetables now?”
“Yes, let’s. I need some peppers and beans. Look at those nuts. I wonder if I should add some to the stew?”
“That sounds like a new idea, Celia. You are always so creative with your cooking. I need to gather some fruits, too.”
The two women, laden with their recent purchases, headed down the dusty street toward their homes. Arriving first at Deborah’s house, they paused. “Celia, how do you do it? Day after day, taking care of Daniel this way. Don’t you ever get discouraged? I am not sure I could be so loving and kind.”
“God has shown me love and kindness that I do not deserve. I love my husband and I will show the same mercy and love to him every day of our lives.”
“God has blessed that man through you. Continue in His love.”
Stepping inside, Celia was startled by a man standing inside her door in the dusk of evening. “Who are you? What do you want?” Before she could say another word, the man walked toward her. “Daniel? How?” Celia never even noticed her goods falling to the floor at her feet.
“My love, it is amazing. Caleb, Nathanial, Paul, and Syrus took me to see Him. We could not get into the house, so they lowered me through the roof. Jesus saw my faith and forgave my sins. I wanted to bow before Him, but I could not, for my useless legs would not work. I simply thanked Him.”
“But now you are walking. How is that possible?”
“The Pharisees began to question Jesus because He forgave my sins. Instead of answering them, He looked away and fixed His eyes directly at me. He said, ‘I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.’ Celia, I have been cured by God Himself. I rose to my feet with strong legs, and took up my mat. Then I knelt to my knees to thank Him. He smiled upon me and I knew that I looked at the face of God.”
