Reading is fundamental. We are all familiar with that phrase, and how true it is. Reading sparks our imaginations, makes it come alive as we turn the pages of our favorite books with love and respect. Nowhere else can we be the hero or heroine. We go beneath the ocean as Captain Nemo. We explore the stars as Luke Skywalker. We go to tea parties as Alice. We solve mysteries as Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys. Our imagination knows no bounds as we open the pages and read each page with a hunger to explore the depths of the imagination.
I once sat down with a book, not a small book by any means, but I was hungry for every word the author had written. I was so engrossed in the book that when I closed it I was surprised to find that there wasn’t a blizzard going on outside, or that there wasn’t at least three feet of driven snow, as well there shouldn’t have been because it was the middle of July, and everyone knows that it doesn’t snow in July in the Northern Hemisphere.
My hunger for the written word began in first grade. I learned my ABCs like everyone else, but as I recall it, I’m sure my mother would have other memories, I learned them one day and the next I was reading Dick and Jane perfectly.
Can’t you just picture those words on the page with the pictures that went along with them? I can. And that is what a good book is supposed to do. Stay with you no matter how old you get. They are best friends and best friends are there through thick and thin.
Now I may not read Dick and Jane anymore but I do have books on my shelves, as I’m sure you do that you’ve read over and over. They spark imaginations as I stated above, they make us heroes for a day, they help make us new people, and they show us how to fix things. Books are teachers all you have to do is open the cover and start reading. There is a wealth of knowledge between those covers. Even in silly books you can always find a moral or two. Think what Dr. Seuss did for children and adults everywhere. His silly books always had some kind of moral, all you had to do was look for it, or not.
So expand your horizons. Pick up a book, become Rayford Steele as he tries to outsmart the Anti-Christ, go fishing with Tom and Huck, or learn how to fix your toilet. It’s all in a book. All you have to do is open and read.
