Desire is not unlike these exquisite creatures. It, too, is endangered. Lust, well, that is a different animal altogether. Lust is a vulture patiently waiting for the sounds and smells of death before devouring it’s victim. Lust is a Polar Bear, the only animal that will stalk human beings. Though magnificent and beautiful, it’s attentiveness is a mask covering it’s attempt to memorize the details of the target it is hunting.
What is this thing, this confusing mix of tenderness and power, that is desire? How does it ignite in the heart of a lover and remain, burning strong through tragedy, storms and dark, dark nights?
Marriage, that nest of desire, is also an endangered creature. It requires both the gentleness of love humidified air currents to float on, and the strength to endure the journey of thousands of miles.
How can I love more - desire more - my husband, after pledging my heart to him so long ago? How can he feel the same? Life is not what we planned 23 years ago. Some of our youthful innocence and zeal has been worn away by the sandpaper of life. We’ve grown into different people than we thought we would be 23 years ago. The physical things in our lives have become misshapen, misplaced and trampled. Some dreams have been unrealized, others have been forgotten.
Even more beyond our understanding is the fact that Jesus desires us. It’s embarrassing to read some of the raw passion expressed by God in His Word. I feel like a voyeur when reading the Song of Solomon. To think that those words, those feelings, might show us God’s longing for His own, is too delicate to scrutinize, too powerful to comprehend.
To ponder that Jesus calls us His bride, knowing that for the bride, the groom has gnawing desire, brings on a flush of feelings that can’t be ignored. Jesus longs for consummation, and gently, patiently endures what it takes to get there. Oh, I want to be a wise and waiting bride, listening intently for His call.
