He walked into his office and plopped down into his comfortable desk chair. He thought about it for a minute and realized that almost anything he could sit on right now would be comfortable. He snickered to himself and realized just how much God had given him. He had gone from a poor farmer’s boy in Pennsylvania to a world renowned neurosurgeon in one of the largest hospitals in the country. His office was larger that most people’s studio apartment and he had all of the latest equipment.
He leaned back as far as his chair would let him and put his feet on the desk. He put his hands behind his head and closed his eyes and began to think. He thought of the lead nurse, oh, what was her name again? Oh, Miss Hardy was her name. She seemed to know much more than the others and seemed a quick thinker, almost anticipating his needs as he worked.
He began to doze off, going over everything that had happened during surgery in his mind. He recalled every move he made, every decision he made and every statement that was made. He had to make sure he did everything correctly. As his mind drifted to the end of the surgery, he remembered a small vein that he had meant to close before ending. He had meant to come back to it, as there were more important ones to get to first. He knew this could be deadly, especially for the condition the kid was in to begin with. He struggled to wake up, fought with his bodies need for sleep. He prayed that God would help him get up and fix this problem.
As he fought, the door to his office swung open and he jumped. His chair tipped backwards, spitting the doctor out and waking him up completely.
“Doctor, we have a problem, the boy is losing blood somewhere and we’re losing him quickly.” She said in hurried tones.
“Yes, I think I know exactly what the problem is, quickly, get him back into the O.R. and prep him, I need to go back in.” He said loudly, trying to get the sleep from his mind.
“Let the mother know that we need to get back in right away, to save his life!” he shouted to the nurse, who was already around the corner of the hall.
He readied himself and ran to surgery to prep. He knew he needed to do this quick, this boys life hung in the balance. He quickly prayed again, asking God to guide him and show him anything that needed done.
As he prepped the boy was brought in and prepped. He stepped in and went to work. He meticulously went through the tissue, checking and double checking, just to make sure nothing else was missed. He had the lead nurse, Miss Hardy close him up and he went out and cleaned up.
He saw the boy go back out into recovery and saw his mother walking beside the table.
“Thank you, God, for helping me with that.” He said softly, and then retired to his office once more.
