IF ID BEEN THERE

If Id been there,
Id have sat on the ground
with all the rest,
the thickness of my handmade dress
my only cover
from the dewy damp grass
beneath me on that hillside.

Id have sat, like all the others;
babies with their mothers,
fathers, and countless others.
Id have waited just to hear.
with a patient ear,
though the sun grew hotter overhead,
and my mouth craved water
and a bit of bread.
Id have waited just to hear Him speak
words so wise that would help me seek
the power of His presence in my heart.
And Id have listened hard to hear Him say
on the grassy hill on that sun filled day,
about a Kingdom
not so far away,
filled with the promise of joy.

Id have listened hard,
sitting perfectly still
Grasping each word
on that grassy hill
And Id have come away,
with a treasure so great
The joy of promise on that Son filled day.

Creative. Joy does come from being still and listening to Him. Good job!

Beautiful imagery! I so enjoy living this experience through the speaker in this lovely poem! May we all be like this girl as she is so expectant of the sure joy she knows will come sitting in the Light of the Son!

I immediately pictured the hillside as being on Calvary...however, from the other comments, I guess it was another hillside where Jesus taught. Anyway, neither here nor there - I enjoyed the poem immensely.
