In today’s fast paced world it is hard to not be exposed to the troubles in this world. We still have some of the old newspapers in which we can read about it. We have the radio for the local, national and even international news. And, of course, we have the new big screen TV with its news stories with pictures exposing the best and the worst of situations. But the newest would be the news apps for our seemingly necessary telephones. It seems we can’t get away from any of the trouble of this world. So, I ask, "what should we make of all this news and the exposure we have to all this news?"
I say, “We should make nothing of it at all”!
After the clamoring and jangling of the crown quieted down, I went on to explain why we should neither be concerned nor upset by being exposed to all this news that is causing the troubles in this world.
I started by asking a question. “Can you tell me three important news breaking stories that happened six months ago that has affected your life personally?” “How about two months ago?” “How about one month ago?”
“I am still waiting for hands.”
“OK. Let us start from a different direction.” “What is the last major breaking news story you have been exposed to and how did this exposure directly affect your life personally?”
Silence. Nothing but silence.
“Now, do you see what I mean?” “We are bombarded with news story after news story which many times will frustrate us, get us angry, bring about worry, cause us to cry or expose some other emotion in us for a short time.” “But, it is only for a time.”
“It is not worth it.”
“Our attitude towards being exposed to local, national, or even international news that we can’t do anything about is to pray’.” That’s all, pray! “
“Praying allows us to express joy, if the news is joyous.” “Praying allows us to get rid of any anger or frustrations the exposure caused us.” “It clears our minds of revengeful thoughts.” “Praying aids us in having a kinder attitude towards those in the news.” “Praying also helps us get rid of worry.”” And praying might also help us in one other area.” “Praying about some news story may cause us to see that we could do more about the situation or people in the news story.”
“So, the NEWS HEADLINES you are now hearing is first, not to worry about news.” “Most of it you will forget in a matter of days and you can’t do much about it anyway.” “Much of the rest will only bring out attitudes we shouldn't expose to others.” (“Although it should bring out prayer in us.”) ”The news that is left may be our marching orders for the day, the week, the month or maybe even the rest of our life.” “It may be that there would be one news story that we will “click” with. This exposure may arm us with a cause worth working for.” “And even with this result from a news story, it is best to pray about it.”
