As a school girl I learnt that sunlight, air and green leaves together spell photosynthesis – a process in which the plant breathes in the air and in the presence of sunlight synthesizes energy from the carbon dioxide contained in the air and breathes out oxygen. All other creatures breathe in the oxygen in the air and breathe out the carbon dioxide which in turn is inhaled by the plants. Only an omniscient God could have planned such a complex system of co-existence for His creatures. This is the process of recycling long before man coined that word!
This same principle for growth and nourishment exists in our lives as Christians. Jesus said that He is the light of the world. Inhaling and exhaling is one of the primary functions of all living beings. However it is only in the presence of the Son’s light we can inhale the oxygen of His righteousness and exhale the carbon dioxide of sin and live a life that will bless those around us.
It is remarkable that God could use such a simple and common illustration to teach such a great truth. I consider life as a treasure hunt and I am sure that if I really strive for it I could find treasures of God’s wisdom tucked away in little packages all around me. Jesus said that if we diligently search we would find them. I find that there is a thrill, an excitement, and a satisfying joy in this exercise that keeps my mind alert and agile. It protects me from becoming bored, senile and depressed. The deep, deep wisdom of God is a mystery of light, the search of which culminates reverent wonder.
