And rocked you to sleep?
Who held you close;
Night watches did keep?
Who read to you
And helped you to learn?
Who prayed for you,
Over you did yearn?
Who was there when you skinned your knee?
When you did your best and still failed?
Who stayed with you in the night
When dreams your sleep assailed?
Who celebrated your victories
And rejoiced when you won?
Who encouraged you to better,
My daughter and my son?
Though to me you were not born.
I am truly your mother.
I have earned the right to say
I love you like no other.
I will not give up
Though at times you fight and rebel.
For you I will petition
And storm the gates of hell.
You are a work in progress
God finishes what He starts.
I trust Him to do a work
Within your lives and hearts.
