Focusing on Pastor Todd’s words, Aleksandar leaned back and watched the old man. He was getting on in years but had a fire that refused to go out and a passion for the people of the city; one couldn’t help but admire his devotion.
Just now he was leaning forward over the stone pulpit vigorously waving his arms as his shaky old voice echoed through the sanctuary. “Now is the time to decide, my children. The Lord is giving you, giving me the chance to change our future. With the Lord God of heaven on your side what have you to fear? Life is never easy, and it is messy at times but TRUST in the Lord and He will guide you.’
A smile creased Aleksandar’s handsome face, how he loved coming to this place. Even if this hadn’t been his appointed post he couldn’t have stayed away if he tried.
The whisper of a child drew his eyes away from the pastor and they settled on a thin little girl pulling on her mother’s arm. Little Carol Whitmore didn’t deserve the father she had. She and her mother had to live with an abusive alcoholic bitter man who once had been a devoted husband. They had just started attending the services and Aleksander hoped they would continue coming.
His eyes strayed two rows up to study Jean Lemire. She looked a little pale, a little shaky, but she seemed to be doing all right after her latest chemo treatment. She was all alone in this world yet she was cheerful and content, relying on her Father to steady her.
To her right sat old Mrs. Kampberry. Aleksandar watched as her head nodded in rhythm with her breathing, she had dozed off again. She hadn’t much time left here yet she refused to miss a single service. He knew it gave her comfort to be in an atmosphere of worship.
Letting his gaze wander down the rows his eyes stopped on a huddled lump seated on a bench near the door. It was impossible to tell if it were a man or woman under all those clothes yet Aleksander instantly knew it was a young woman named Janice Merino.
He watched as her shoulders shook and knew she was crying. She was only seventeen and had run away from her foster home. She had been living on the streets for the last year and lately she had become tempted by the drugs and the other easy outs the street people were addicted too.
Pushing himself off the beam Aleksander drifted down to stand behind the row Janice was slouched in. Leaning over he laid his large hand on her shaking shoulder, transferring a little comfort. Bowing his great head he prayed for her, lifting her up to the Most High.
Once she had calmed he moved on to the next person, as one by one unbeknownst to the church goers a mighty warrior of the Lord laid his hand on them and lifted each individual up in prayer.
This was his duty, his assignment, to guard the Stone Abbey Church and continually pray for each of its attendants. Sometimes he was allowed a vision of what was to come for a person, but today was not one of those days.
Walking up the grand central aisle Aleksander allowed a little current of air from his great wings to fan the people sitting close and knew they wondered where the gust of warm air came from.
Settling in behind Pastor Todd, Aleksander laid his mighty hands on the pastor’s shoulders filling him with an unearthly love straight from his Heavenly Father.
This church may not have a large audience but he would guard and pray for the ones it held in its embrace. The church and its occupants were his duty and he would fight mightily for the turning of their souls. He stood tall and proud, the invisible guardian as the familiar fierce protectiveness filled his soul.
