I was conceived of Wisdom and Understanding. My brothers are Merry and Gladness and my sisters are Comfort and Consolation.

At birth I stood before the Almighty and he named me Encouragement. He commanded, ‘Go and dwell among my people and tread the lanes of darkness that trouble some souls.’

So I went forth from the Lord and dwelt in the sepulchres of their inner spirits to channel a breeze toward the candle of the Lord which had been dimmed by mankind’s fall. I asked, ‘Lord, how can I lighten these heavy spirits that are engulfed in this gloom?’

‘I have made you a channel through which the pure words of men to men will waft the embers back into flames.’

So I began my travels among mankind.

I journeyed along this path with my companion the bright Holy Dove. Together we lightened heavy burdens among mankind by the brightness of the Son’s Glory. The Lord made me drip like honey from the fingers of the Holy Spirit bringing sweetness to the downcast and lifting up the fallen.

I knocked on the doors of the prison houses of darkness which enslaved men in constant bondage. Opened but a little and I enter to swallow darkness and dispel discouragement.

My desire was to walk in high places with the revived ones; to stand on the mountain of Holiness and look out together over the golden fields of goodness and gaze at the verdant woodland’s strength and constancy.

I was troubled by the blackness of men’s imaginations and their battle against my white, so I addressed my God, ‘Lord, my desire is to always to inhabit the high places with those walking in victory, why must I constantly return to and trudge the lowly path of mankind’s disappointments?’

‘You are my chosen one who has the victory over despair, disappointment and discouragement. You are like a precious stone shining in the vaults of the earth, a gleaming gem from the rich treasures of darkness which are stored up in secret places.’

‘Lord, thank you for encouraging the Encourager, surely all resources are from you.’

‘You can never fail – you are a fruit from my tree of life. All who eats of you will rejoice and be glad. Those who feast on you continually will have strength, health and fullness of life.’

‘Lord, my desire is to possess wholly the dungeons in men’s souls and transform them into free places. Like the birds let loose from cages that can soar and sing on high and that they all may learn to sing my song of encouragement.’

The Song of Encouragement

The darkened earth has been made bright.
All hope is now abroad
And I can never praise enough
The wonder of my Lord.

If I could live ten thousand years
And many more beside.
I’d thank my Lord for lifting me
To him among the heights.’
