When our logical selves should be fearful of everyday life threatening risks, we dismiss them with little or no thought. The idea of air travel with upwards of three hundred people, all breathing the same recycled air, borders on the ridiculous. Enjoying a professional football game with thousands in a stadium could be a target for terrorism. Anytime we get behind the wheel of a car, and not come in contact with a drunk or impaired driver is not as unlikely as you might think. The handling of our food sources should bring stark terror but it does not. We are also very trusting of our government to watch over us. These are just a few examples of how we (the human race) are not generally fearful people.
God in His wisdom gave us a “no fear here” attitude that keeps mankind exploring and ever evolving. It is good to know what God did give us to operate in this world. “It” keeps us coming out of our houses everyday. “It” keeps us living in this imperfect world with our imperfect selves. The “it” factor is faith. We have faith that the airplane will take us safely and not comprise our health to our destination. We have the audacity (faith) to believe that we can go into venues with the masses and return home safely. We believe that we can eat our daily bread and no harm comes to us. We can even believe on a daily basis that when we leave our love ones or send them off in automobiles or public transportation that it is a good chance that we will see them at the end day. Is it based on certainty? No it is not, just plain faith.
What then is faith? Again the answer is in the scriptures, “faith is the substance of the things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”(Heb.11: 1) Hoped for? Yes, hoped for. The safe trip, the good medical report, and the desired expected end. Faith activates the power of love and a sound mind. It may sound crazy to the logical mind but our faith keeps us moving and not becoming frozen in what was or what could happen. Some fear is necessary to bring light to a potentially dangerous situation so that changes can be made. But those who live in fear constantly short change themselves greatly. They never activate the power, which is faith, which activates the love and the sound mind.
Great is the love that God has for us, to have equipped us with what is necessary to live in this world. By faith he formed the world and all that is in it. By faith I believe that he is, and by faith I fear no evil.
